Cheongju rice cake café pickup for honey tteok: Tteokmama

In short

Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch is a dessert rice cake café in Yullyang-dong, Cheongju, Chungbuk. I preordered a 24-piece box of flat honey tteok and six strawberry mochi for 9,900 won each, and especially loved how soft the honey tteok stayed after refrigeration. Verdict: a lovely choice for soft rice cake treats and Chuseok wrapping.

As someone who loves rice cakes, I seem to crave them even more as the Chuseok holiday gets closer, haha. Today, I’m introducing Tteokmama, a dessert rice cake café I think about from time to time even when it isn’t Chuseok.

Tteokmama café and parking in Yullyang-dong, Cheongju

Tteokmama in Yullyang-dong, Cheongju, is quite a large café. There was also space to park right beside it.

Hours are 9 AM to 9 PM! For this Chuseok holiday, it will be open through the day before Chuseok and closed on the day itself and the following day, so keep that in mind, haha. Once you walk in, you’ll see the spacious counter right away.

Drink menu

Tteokmama has lots of café drinks, too. There are coffee options including Americano, café latte, cappuccino, vanilla latte, caramel macchiato, café mocha, dolce latte, cold brew, and decaf Dutch coffee, plus ube latte, matcha latte, mugwort latte, misutgaru (multigrain powder) latte, strawberry latte, chocolate latte, sweet-potato latte, strawberry smoothie, mango smoothie, blueberry smoothie, yogurt smoothie, iced tea, and more—a wider selection than you usually find at a regular café.

There are also drinks that suit a rice cake café, such as jujube tea, ssanghwa tea, sikhye (sweet rice drink), and healthy fruit juices, so I think visitors of any age would be happy here.

A spacious, quiet café space

I also loved that the café area was this roomy and quiet.

Refrigerated rice cakes and fruit mochi

There are so many rice cakes with such pretty shapes and colors!

Beautifully colored and shaped refrigerated rice cakes

The red-bean filling in the fruit mochi is very sweet, so personally, I found the one topped with slightly tart strawberry the most delicious.

It’s so amazing that the refrigerated rice cakes from Tteokmama, except for fruit mochi, stay soft and in just as good condition even after sitting in the fridge for a few days! Fruit mochi, however, should be eaten on the day of purchase, haha.

Room-temperature rice cakes and snacks

The individually available rice cakes seem really reasonably priced and great. Wouldn’t they be perfect as a little snack alongside a café drink? Options like chocolate injeolmi (glutinous rice cake coated in bean powder), Oreo seolgi (steamed rice cake), and strawberry-jam seolgi are hard to find elsewhere, and I think younger people would love them too!

I also love walnut gangjeong (crunchy candied walnuts), and they sell it at Tteokmama too, haha. There were many kinds of yakgwa (honey cookies), from salted yakgwa and honey yakgwa to handmade yakgwa, at a range of prices.

Yakgwa and individually sold jocheong

They even sell individual portions of jocheong (rice syrup) for dipping garaetteok (cylinder-shaped rice cake)! It looked convenient since you don’t need to pour it into a separate container, so I took a photo, haha.

Chuseok songpyeon 2 kg bojagi wrapping prices

Premium 2 kg Chuseok songpyeon bojagi wrapping

It wasn’t labeled exactly as a holiday gift set, but I saw that buying 2 kg of songpyeon comes with premium bojagi wrapping. With the holiday coming up, I thought it would be nice to take to your in-laws’ or spouse’s parents’ home.

It would also be nice for a formal family meeting, or a 70th- or 80th-birthday celebration for an elder, right? The bojagi finishing included ribbons and rose-like decorative knots, haha.

Here are the songpyeon prices that make me think of Chuseok!

  • Five-color sesame songpyeon / bean songpyeon: ₩18,000 for 1 kg, ₩35,000 for 2 kg (premium bojagi wrapping)
  • Ramie red-bean songpyeon / ramie sesame songpyeon: ₩20,000 for 1 kg, ₩39,000 for 2 kg (premium bojagi wrapping)

When you buy 2 kg, the per-unit price is lower and premium bojagi wrapping is included, so I think it’s really a good deal, haha.

Picking up flat honey tteok and strawberry mochi

Preordered flat honey tteok and strawberry mochi picked up at Tteokmama

That day, I preordered and picked up a 24-piece box of flat honey tteok and a six-piece box of strawberry mochi.

They were ₩9,900 each. The ribbon wrapping makes them feel like gifts, haha.

The containers have a bamboo-like material, so they look very neat and pretty even when you serve them as they are.

Strawberry mochi is my favorite fruit mochi! It’s sweet, so it’s hard to eat more than one at a time, but it’s so delicious with an Americano or milk!

Flat honey tteok stamped with flower shapes

The flat honey tteok is stamped with flower shapes, so it’s really pretty. The rice cakes come in pink, yellow, green, and white, and except for the green ones, they have such a soft, pale look, right? Green makes me think of mugwort rice cake, which I love, so even if it weren’t pretty, it somehow feels like it absolutely has to be there, hahaha.

The honey inside is nicely sweet and moist, and it goes so well with the soft rice cake skin. Tteokmama’s honey tteok is one I really love because it doesn’t get hard even after a few days in the fridge! Personally, it’s easier and tastier than dipping jeolpyeon (sliced rice cake) in jocheong, so I recommend it, haha.

Today, while visiting Tteokmama, I looked around the various rice cake options and the prices of Chuseok songpyeon sets too, haha. I wrote this hoping it helps anyone considering buying songpyeon for the upcoming Chuseok holiday.
