Black sesame fig cheesecake at a Sinnonhyeon café: Something About

In short

Something About Coffee is a three-story standalone dessert café in an alley between Sinnonhyeon and Gangnam stations in Seoul. After lunch at Chipotle in Gangnam with her sister, the writer ordered the black sesame fig cheesecake, an egg cookie, an iced Americano and a hojicha choux milk tea, then looked around all three floors and the terrace. The fig and black sesame pairing worked far better than expected, making Something About Coffee an easy recommendation when you need a breather near Gangnam Station.

My sister and I went to Chipotle in Gangnam and there was a dessert spot right nearby, so we stopped in!

This place is known for scones and financiers, and it's been around a pretty long time. Surviving this long near Gangnam Station means... it's got to be strong.

Where is Something About Coffee, and what are the hours?

Walk up from the main Sinnonhyeon–Gangnam street toward the back of the CGV and you'll find an alley with a handful of cafés and restaurants. Among them, Something About Coffee stands out — a standalone three-story building, all-white exterior.

They're open daily 11:00–22:30, and there's no parking.

Seating on the first, second and third floors, plus the terrace

The 1st floor has the baking room and plenty of roomy tables. It's relatively quiet on this side, so people were sitting solo or having small group meetings.

You order on the 2nd floor.

The 2nd floor has floor-to-ceiling windows and terrace seating, so this was my favorite spot. From the brick pillars to the chandelier hanging from the ceiling, it feels like a renovated house, haha.

There are so many tables, plus group tables too!

This is the 3rd floor space. It seems like the higher you go, the fewer people there are. If I had to describe it in one line: white tones with a spoonful of vintage? I especially loved those classic-looking windows.

Step out onto the terrace and the classic feel gets even stronger. Kind of gives Coffee Prince vibes — like Go Eun-chan could pop out any second, haha. Out of the whole third floor this spot was my favorite, but I wanted air conditioning so I just went back down to the 2nd floor.

Ordering the black sesame fig cheesecake and egg cookie

My blood sugar's dropping so let's order first.

Figs showed up here too... I've caught a bad case of fig fever lately (basically the illness where you order anything with figs in it, no questions asked). The black sesame fig cheesecake looked too good to skip, so I got it.

Scones, cookies, financiers — they're all lined up too. Everything's covered, which feels nice and hygienic. This place used to be famous for its two-tone jam cookies but I didn't see those anymore? Everything here is handmade so you can trust it.

This egg cookie is what I always order when I come here. Not quite an egg tart, not quite a cookie... it has this strange, addictive charm.

I was going to order my usual two iced Americanos, but then I spotted the hojicha choux milk tea~ Ended up getting an iced Americano and a hojicha choux milk tea instead.

We grabbed a bright window seat. The view is just the Kobe Gyukatsu across the street, but around Gangnam Station there's fun in watching people pass by, lol.

How does the black sesame fig cheesecake taste?

Black sesame fig cheesecake. First thing I loved — the fork is big. I'm dead serious about cake, I once nearly ordered a giant fork off a Thai site, lol. Cake is meant to be scooped up in one big bite. Here, you can get fig, black sesame, and cheesecake all in one scoop..🥹

I worried the cake might collapse when I pressed into the fig, but it was so well-ripened that the fork just slid right through. Really sweet too... fresh fig, fig jam, and dried fig inside the cheese too. I never knew black sesame and fig went this well together. Tastier than expected!! Highly recommend.

Egg cookie cut in half showing the filling

The egg cookie has zero eggy fishiness, and the filling is truly smooth. You can really taste the good butter — nice ingredients used here. If you like egg tarts, give this a try.

The hojicha choux milk tea comes topped with hojicha cream and a choux pastry. The choux is an ice choux with slightly frozen cream inside. The cream is on the heavier side, but the hojicha flavor cuts through for a refreshing finish. Personal preference: it tasted better eaten without mixing it into the milk tea! No coffee in this one.

The Americano doesn't overpower either, and pairs well with the desserts.

Is Something About Coffee worth a stop near Gangnam Station?

Something About Coffee has great desserts and a spacious, comfortable café, so it's become a go-to when I need a breather near Gangnam Station. The terrace is well set up too, perfect for weather like this. If you're looking for a café near Gangnam or Sinnonhyeon Station, stop by!
