Seongsu army stew restaurant with 3 broth refills: Songtan Jindaegwang

In short

Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae Seongsu Branch is a Songtan-style budae jjigae (army stew) restaurant in Seongdong, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Seongsu Station Exit 1. For an after-work dinner, the writer and her boyfriend ordered the budae jjigae for two at 26,000 won, added assorted sausages for 9,000 won and ramen noodles, then topped up the broth until each of them had eaten three full bowls. Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae suits anyone after a sausage-packed stew with a deep ham-and-sausage aroma.

Which do you prefer, Songtan-style or Uijeongbu-style budae jjigae (army stew)?! I love the clean taste of Uijeongbu-style, but that day I was craving the deep, meaty flavor of Songtan-style, so I visited a Seongsu budae jjigae spot — here's my review of Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae!

Finding the entrance: an older building, but this is the right one

My boyfriend and I went for dinner after he got off work, and since it wasn't far from Seongsu Station, it was an easy walk. The building looked a little old, so I thought, is this really it? But yes, it is!! Just walk on in.

The stairwell up to the restaurant was covered in posters, full of promises of sausages galore plus "love and care," which got me even more excited haha. Also, apparently takeout gets a 20% discount!!

They said they were looking for customers who'd enjoy their food — so here we are! *^^*

Walking in, I was surprised by how many tables there were and how spacious the place was! The tables themselves were nice and wide too, hahaha. And it was super clean too ;;;

The interior is really retro — it reminded me of a time I briefly worked part-time at an old-school budae jjigae place, and that place was genuinely delicious, so the nostalgia hit and my expectations shot up that this place would be good too.

Menu placed on the table

Prices: budae jjigae for two at 26,000 won plus assorted sausages at 9,000 won

You order at the table, and we got the budae jjigae for two (₩26,000) plus added assorted sausages (₩9,000) and ramen noodles. Office workers from nearby were already eating there, and judging by them, it looked like the kind of place a section-chief-level regular would love. Looks like we found the right spot.

Basic side dishes: fish cake, green onion kimchi, and pickled onions
Self-serve side dish and unlimited rice refill station

For basic side dishes, we got fish cake, green onion kimchi, and pickled onions, and any refills after that are self-serve. Plus, you can eat as much rice as you want!!!! Just promise not to leave any leftovers.

The staff brought it out first, set a timer, and told us to wait — after that, they came back to properly stir in the sauce! While we waited, the delicious smell wafted over and I just wanted to dig in already, ㅠ.

How does the sausage-packed budae jjigae taste?

Sure, we added extra because we wanted more, but honestly there was already so much sausage in there we didn't need to hahaha. My boyfriend loves budae jjigae packed with sausage and he was thrilled;; the more the merrier, honestly 🤍

Sausage-bomb budae jjigae with added assorted sausages

There's a reason it's a well-known Seongsu budae jjigae spot. Not only was it loaded with sausage and ham, but the broth had such a deep meaty flavor that I wondered if the ham and sausage had a higher meat content than usual!! It was that good, seriously!!!! Before we even added the ramen noodles, we each refilled the broth and scooped it up three times;;.

The ramen noodles are Jin Ramen Spicy

Interestingly, the ramen noodles used are Jin Ramen Spicy! It's literally just the instant ramen itself, which was surprising. We'd poured in so much broth that by the end we added a bit of the ramen seasoning packet too, hahaha.

Even after scooping it three times each, there was still sausage left,, this place really doesn't hold back. I was genuinely touched.

Free slushie, coffee and the final verdict

On the way out, there's coffee, yogurt drink, and slushie available for dessert!! In some ways it's a perfectly ordinary menu, yet it's surprisingly hard to find a truly good version of it — Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae packs in such good ham and sausage that even I, a budae jjigae lover, was won over; the flavor deepened the longer it simmered, and I really enjoyed the meal! If you're craving budae jjigae in Seongsu, I recommend Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae, a Seongsu budae jjigae spot loaded with premium ham and sausage.
