Wedge potatoes at a Danyang fried chicken shop: Danyang Heukmaneul
In short
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a black garlic rice-crust dakgangjeong (Korean sweet fried chicken) shop inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang. On a weekday afternoon the writer parked at the free public lot across from the market and picked up a double black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong for 20,000 won plus two bottles of black garlic makgeolli for 10,000 won, waiting 20 minutes because everything is fried to order. The house-roasted nurungji (crispy rice crust), the wedge potatoes and the sharp garlicky sauce are what make Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong worth the stop.

A food recommendation from Danyang's Gugyeong Market — black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong, a Danyang specialty. Black garlic makgeolli, and fried chicken that's crispy outside, tender inside.

Where to park at Gugyeong Market in Danyang
I used the free public lot across from Gugyeong Market. Parking spaces are tight, so if it's full, the lot by the stream usually has plenty of room.

After parking at the public lot, I crossed the street toward the market — and even on a weekday, it was surprisingly busy!

The market has a roof overhead, so it stayed nice and cool.

Wandering through the market alleys, Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong — the famous restaurant here — soon came into view!
Free samples first, then a 20-minute wait
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong sets out samples of the original and extra black garlic flavors right outside, so you can taste before choosing. Since everything is fried to order, it took about 20 minutes to finish.

This place was busy even on a weekday. While waiting, I looked around the shop and noticed they also sell Danyang's specialty black garlic makgeolli!

Right outside, they had samples of the original and extra black garlic dakgangjeong. Being able to taste before ordering — no more decision paralysis! After some deliberation, I went with the extra black garlic version. Since it's fried fresh to order, it took about 20 minutes.

Two bottles of Danyang black garlic makgeolli for 10,000 won
The Danyang black garlic makgeolli sold here comes in a pack of two bottles for 10,000 won, with a carrying handle that makes it perfect as a gift. It had that distinctive strong black garlic aroma, balanced with a bit of bitterness and light sweetness.

The black garlic makgeolli I was most curious about! It comes in a pretty package with a handle, perfect for gifting. Two bottles for just 10,000 won — such an easy souvenir to grab. Looking closely, you can really see bits of garlic in there.

You've got to give this makgeolli from Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong a good shake before pouring! Poured into a glass and tasted — the strong black garlic aroma paired with bitterness and a touch of sweetness made for a distinctive makgeolli. When your mouth gets a little bitter, a bite of the chicken makes for the perfect pairing...
What does the double black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong taste like?
The extra black garlic rice-crust dakgangjeong at Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong costs 20,000 won, and the box was almost as heavy as the two bottles of makgeolli. It's made with house-roasted rice crust, lotus root, potato, and tender chicken, plus a side of pickled radish.

Next up, the extra black garlic rice-crust dakgangjeong from Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong! This box was so heavy — nearly the same weight as the two bottles of makgeolli.

Oh wow... so this is rice-crust dakgangjeong... Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong thoughtfully included pickled radish too.

Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is made with house-roasted rice crust, lotus root, potato, and tender chicken!

They say real dakgangjeong tastes even better once it cools down, and that was exactly the case here. Crispy batter outside, tender chicken inside — crispy-outside-soft-inside perfection. It's not spicy at all; the sauce has a strong garlicky sharpness combined with a sweet jocheong (rice syrup) aroma.

The rice crust pieces were nice and chunky, with a satisfying crunch.

The one letdown: only two wedge potatoes
Personally, the wedge potatoes inside the dakgangjeong were my favorite part! But there were only two pieces, so we had to split them one at a time. It would be great if you could add extra potato wedges... they paired so well with the sauce, ugh. Looking at the photo again makes me want more.
Is Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong worth a stop?
As befits a well-known spot, Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong was busy even on a weekday. It takes about 20 minutes for the chicken to fry up, so if you go browse the market while you wait, it'll be ready by the time you get back! The wait doesn't feel boring at all. Tender chicken soaked in garlicky sauce with a crispy coating, plus black garlic makgeolli you can only find in Danyang... if you're visiting Gugyeong Market in Danyang, I'd recommend stopping by at least once.
