Late-dinner gukbap on Gukchaebosang-ro in Daegu: Hanwoojang

In short

Hanwoojang is a 24-hour gukbap (Korean beef soup with rice) restaurant on Gukchaebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu, running since 1968. After a late tennis lesson, the writer and her partner ordered special ttaro-gukbap (blood sausage soup) at 12,000 won and oxtail soup at 17,000 won, and found the blood sausage cut in big clean-tasting pieces and the oxtail broth milky white and loaded with meat. For a filling late-night meal or a hangover cure in central Daegu, Hanwoojang is the answer.

Why Hanwoojang is the late-night gukbap stop in Daegu after a workout

Hanwoojang, at 555 Gukchaebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu, is a gukbap (Korean soup) restaurant open 24 hours a day, all year round. After a full day of work and then a 🎾 tennis lesson with my partner, my hunger meter was at MAX... so before I got hangry, we rushed over to fill up on gukbap.

Hanwoojang, a well-known Daegu gukbap spot, is open 24 hours, so it's easy to visit anytime — and I was surprised to find out it's been a Blue Ribbon selection for 12 years running...

Hanwoojang's bright exterior even in the late evening

Even at our late evening visit, the exterior was bright and lit up. A 24-hour restaurant is rare to find in Daegu these days!

The banner set up at the entrance made a bold statement right away: 12 consecutive years as a Blue Ribbon pick.

The main hall was arranged with tables for 4 to 6 people, and since it was late evening, the place was filled with all kinds of customers — some having a meal, others having drinks.

On one wall, traces of visits from well-known figures seemed to confirm that Hanwoojang really is a famous restaurant.

We wanted to set up a gate of cattle at the edge of the neighborhood and create a market of generosity

With that philosophy, Hanwoojang first opened its doors in 1968 and is now run by the second generation — still known as one of Daegu's top gukbap restaurants. They still make the broth, simmered for over 12 hours every single day, along with the kimchi and side dishes, all by hand.

There was also a neatly set-up self-serve bar so you could refill any side dishes you'd finished.

Hanwoojang's meal items start from ₩11,000, and what we ordered — special ttaro-gukbap (blood sausage soup) — was ₩12,000, while the oxtail soup was ₩17,000.

The basic side dishes were diced radish kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, and stir-fried anchovies — good pairings for gukbap. The onion soy sauce comes with the oxtail soup order, and it turned out to be the dipping sauce for the oxtail suyuk (boiled meat)!!

How does the special ttaro-gukbap (blood sausage soup) taste?

The special ttaro-gukbap (blood sausage soup), ₩12,000, is a red-broth blood sausage soup with added thin noodles. The broth was rich but not overly seasoned, with a clean flavor that wasn't heavy even for a dinner meal.

Large whole pieces of blood sausage visible in the special ttaro-gukbap

Large, whole pieces of blood sausage went into the soup, and there was no musty or fishy smell, which told me the blood sausage was fresh. It was also loaded with radish, scallion, minced garlic, and lean meat — since I'm more of a toppings person than a broth person, this special ttaro-gukbap suited my taste well.

Hanwoojang oxtail soup: milky broth and meat off the bone

Hanwoojang's oxtail soup had a milky broth that was clean, with no gamey smell, and rich in flavor — and it came loaded with plenty of lean meat, just like the seolleongtang. The oxtail bones had plump, tender meat attached, so it was fun to dip it in the soy sauce and pick it apart.

Who should visit Hanwoojang in Jung-gu, Daegu?

Hanwoojang let me experience the atmosphere and taste of an old-school restaurant that I hadn't felt in a while.

It's in a good location near Dongseong-ro, perfect for stopping by for a hangover cure after a drink. With the weather cooling down these days, I've been craving hot soup in an earthenware bowl. If you're looking for a 24-hour Daegu gukbap restaurant, I recommend Hanwoojang!
