Pohang Mundeok conveyor sushi: gamtaeuni and grilled yukhoe sushi

Today I invited my youngest sibling out in Pohang and we went to a brand-new conveyor-belt sushi restaurant that opened just a few months ago in Mundeok, Ocheon-eup, Pohang.

Mundeok is a neighborhood packed with apartment complexes, so there's steady demand for family dining. There are plenty of dinner options around, but we were craving sushi, and searching turned up Hojueseo on Hoejeon Chobap. Looks pretty sharp from the outside, right? There's parking in front of the building, and even on a weekday evening when I visited, most of the spots were already taken.

It's right on the roadside so it's easy to find, and the red-brick exterior with bright lighting makes it stand out from a distance in the evening. There's a small outdoor space beside the restaurant with benches, so even if there's a wait, it's not a cramped experience. The sign itself was distinctive — big text reading 'Australia conveyor-belt sushi' with the flat rate of ₩2,200. Given today's prices, that number just grabs your attention.

Waiting area with massage chairs: is Hojueseo on Hoejeon Chobap good with kids?

Hojueseo on Hoejeon Chobap has a separate waiting lounge, so it's comfortable even if there's a line. There's a sofa, chairs, and even two massage chairs. I never expected to see massage chairs at a conveyor sushi place.

There are also high chairs available, which is welcome news if you're eating out with a kid.

Bar seats, table seats and tablet ordering at Hojueseo on Hoejeon Chobap

What impressed me most about Hojueseo on Hoejeon Chobap was how the space was laid out.

and table seats are arranged further inside. With the wood-tone interior and stainless steel rail, it felt clean and well organized.

Every seat has a tablet installed, so you can order sushi that isn't on the rail through the tablet. There's also a receipt review event that gets you a free plate of sushi. That's a bonus you have to claim, right?

There's a wide variety of sushi and side dishes to choose from. Pick and pick.

Plates of sushi circle nonstop on the rail. They come with hygiene covers, so you can feel completely at ease. Dessert, rakkyo (pickled shallots), and pickled ginger are also on the rail. For the rakkyo or pickled ginger, you take the side dish container down from the rail, help yourself, and put the container back on the rail.

How do the gamtaeuni, shrimp tempura maki and grilled yukhoe sushi taste?

The first thing I picked up at Hojueseo on Hoejeon Chobap was the gamtaeuni, served on a wooden stand. It's sushi topped with gamtae (a seaweed similar to laver) and sea urchin roe, giving it a subtle sweetness and nutty, wholesome flavor.

Next, shrimp tempura maki, a Japanese-style gimbap (seaweed rice roll). It's a gimbap-shaped roll filled with fried shrimp, which I picked for my kid. The vegetables were fresh, so the kid ate it happily too.

The yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) sushi was so good I had several. My kid, who loves yukhoe, ate it well too, so we each picked up a couple. It's sushi topped with yukhoe tossed in a slightly sweet-salty sauce. Personally, the yukhoe sushi was delicious, but the grilled yukhoe sushi was my absolute favorite. You have to try the grilled yukhoe sushi.

A flat 2,200 won per plate, with no plate colors to count

Every plate at Hojueseo on Hoejeon Chobap has the same design with a black rim. They're all unified at ₩2,200 per plate, so it was nice not having to check plate colors.

When picking sushi, the grilled varieties taste better warm, and the staff will heat them up for you too. I worried the kids might not have much to eat since these might seem like something only adults enjoy, but that worry was unnecessary — there were plenty of grilled sushi types topped with shrimp that kids love.

This is the avocado gravlax salmon sushi. The well-cured red gravlax salmon paired with avocado made for really pretty colors. The salmon was well managed with no excess moisture, so I enjoyed its soft texture along with the avocado's wholesome flavor.

By the time we finished eating, quite a few plates had piled up. Things were similar at the table next to us. Because of the flat pricing structure, there was psychologically no resistance to grabbing one more plate. Looked at positively, it means you can enjoy without worry; looked at the other way, it's worth staying alert and counting.
