Pohang mulhoe restaurant with extra cucumber added: Ppwang Mulhoe

In short

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (raw fish in cold broth) and squid restaurant on Haean-ro, right in front of Yeongildae Beach in Pohang. For lunch the order was a half-and-half mulhoe of squid and flounder with extra cucumber, eaten first as a spicy seasoned toss and then again with the cold broth poured in, plus fried squid and a big squid and green onion pancake. With a self-serve side dish bar and plenty of roomy seating, Ppwang Mulhoe is an easy first bowl of mulhoe on a Pohang trip.

Exterior of Ppwang Mulhoe in front of Yeongildae Beach

If you're visiting Pohang, you absolutely have to have a bowl of mulhoe (raw fish in cold spicy broth) before you leave!!✨ So I went to Ppwang Mulhoe, right in front of Yeongildae Beach. I stumbled on it while looking for lunch during my Pohang trip, and the location was great and the space was spacious, so it was comfortable to eat there. If you're looking for a good mulhoe spot in Pohang, it's worth a visit since they have quite a variety of mulhoe on the menu.

Interior

Ppwang Mulhoe's building and parking space on Haean-ro

Ppwang Mulhoe sits right in front of Yeongildae Beach, so it's a great spot to stop by while traveling around Pohang. There's parking right in front of the restaurant, plus a public parking lot nearby, so it was fine even if you're driving.

Spacious interior of Ppwang Mulhoe with plenty of tables

Once inside, the interior felt more spacious and clean than I expected, with quite a lot of tables. So it looked comfortable whether you're eating as a couple or with a bigger group. Since there were plenty of tables, it seemed like a good pick for a meal spot if you're visiting Pohang with a group.

The menu is quite varied — squid and flounder mulhoe, hoe-deopbap (raw fish over rice), fried squid, squid pancake, boiled squid, raw flounder sashimi, and even bulgogi rice bowls.

The side dishes were self-serve — you go grab them yourself, and there were a lot of different kinds.

From stir-fried sausage to corn salad, seaweed stem, stir-fried fish cake, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), fried snacks and more — I loved that you could take only what you wanted, as much as you wanted!

They also served thin noodles and squid soup as side dishes. Nice to have a little something to nibble on before the mulhoe arrived.

Half-and-half squid and flounder mulhoe: why to add extra cucumber

What we ordered

A bowl of squid and flounder half-and-half mulhoe

Since they had a mulhoe with half squid and half flounder, we went with that. I'd read that Pohang-style mulhoe isn't eaten with broth poured in from the start — you eat the raw fish mixed with seasoning like a salad first, then add the cold broth later. Trying it myself, it really was fun to enjoy it two different ways.

Cold Pohang-style mulhoe with broth poured in

At first, we mixed the squid and flounder well with the seasoning so it soaked in, and after eating a good portion, we poured in the cold broth. The broth was spicy, tangy, and refreshing — it really woke up the palate — and the squid and flounder were both generously portioned. You could choose to add cucumber, and I'd say you should absolutely add it! The crunchy cucumber made the cold, refreshing flavor of the mulhoe stand out even more. Eating it this way, I finally understood why people seek out mulhoe on a Pohang trip. If you're looking for a good mulhoe spot in Pohang and want to try proper Pohang-style mulhoe, this place is worth it.

It felt like a waste to only have mulhoe, so we also ordered fried squid and squid pancake. The fried squid was crispy on the outside and chewy inside, and the portion was bigger than expected. Savory and crunchy — the kind of dish that would go perfectly with a beer 🥹💛

A large squid pancake packed with squid

And the squid pancake is genuinely huge. It looked generous even before we started eating, and it was packed with squid — every bite kept turning up more. If you're visiting with a group, it seems like a good idea to order the pancake or fried squid alongside the mulhoe to share. If you're looking for somewhere to eat near Yeongildae Beach on a Pohang trip, Ppwang Mulhoe was a solid choice. It would especially suit people looking for fresh squid mulhoe, and with so many squid dishes on the menu, there was plenty to choose from depending on taste.

If you're looking for a good Pohang mulhoe restaurant, try experiencing the two-step way of eating it yourself, along with the crispy fried squid and the huge squid pancake. Mulhoe felt like a menu you can't skip on a Pohang trip — almost a must-do course for me. Yeongildae Beach is close by too, so it's nice to stop in for a meal and a look at the sea :)
