Cockle bulgogi bibimbap set for three in Gyeongju: Hwangnam Dukkebi
In short
Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant Hwangnam Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, with floor-seating outdoor tables and a pet-friendly area. Three friends who had already had brunch shared one kkomak bulgogi daepan bibimbap SET (cockle and bulgogi bibimbap on a large platter) and a hanwoo yukhoe mulhoe (beef tartare cold soup) for a late lunch, and the spicy Beolgyo king cockle rice paired with sweet flame-grilled bulgogi never got old. The handmade tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) from the review event was good too, so the group plans to try the braised pork back ribs and the Cheomseongdae-shaped tteokgalbi next time.

A must-try menu at Hwangnam Dukkebi, a well-known spot on Hwangnidan-gil: the kkomak bulgogi daepan bibimbap SET.

While traveling around Gyeongju with friends, we finally visited a place I'd had my eye on for a while. It's a well-known Hwangnidan-gil restaurant with seated tables, spicy dishes adults love, and tteokgalbi (Korean-style meat patties) that kids can enjoy too — I'd always thought I should come back here with my kid someday. This time, since we were already at Hwangnidan-gil with friends, we dropped by Hwangnam Dukkebi.
Inside Hwangnam Dukkebi: seating, floor tables and the pet-friendly patio
Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant is a Korean restaurant known for its rib stew made with domestic aged kimchi and Gyeongju's first Cheomseongdae 7-piece set. It's open 11:00 - 21:00, with a break time of 15:00 - 17:00 and another break at 20:30, and it stays open as usual during the Chuseok holiday from September 24 to 26. Vegan menu available, kids' chairs available, pets welcome.

Near the entrance there were seated tables with an outdoor feel — the exact kind of seated space I'd been eyeing, with a cozy, grandma's-house sort of vibe. This area also allows dogs, so there were tables where people were eating with their dogs. Right next to it was space to leave strollers, dog strollers, or suitcases — very fitting for a sightseeing spot like Hwangnidan-gil — so it looked convenient for families with kids or travelers.

The interior was long and narrow, with the same cozy feeling as outside.

Is one kkomak bulgogi daepan bibimbap SET enough for three people?
Hwangnam Dukkebi, a well-known Hwangnidan-gil restaurant in Gyeongju, has a one-menu-per-person rule. There were three of us women, and we spent a while staring at the menu trying to decide. The rib stew is the famous item here, but we'd already had brunch haha, so for a lighter (?) late lunch we ordered one kkomak bulgogi daepan bibimbap SET and a hanwoo yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef in cold broth).

The food came out faster than expected. The kkomak bulgogi daepan bibimbap SET came with Boseong wangkkomak-bap (rice topped with large cockles sourced from Boseong) and charcoal-grilled bulgogi side by side.

Just looking at the plate, it was generous enough for three women to share, and I liked being able to try two kinds of bibimbap at once.

What the Beolgyo king cockle rice tastes like
First, the cockles had a chewy texture with seasoning that added a slightly spicy kick. It wasn't harshly spicy, more the kind of heat that whets your appetite, so eating the cockles with the seasoned rice tasted even better.
Especially when eating the cockles with rice, I couldn't stop reaching for more — topping it with the seaweed and flying fish roe that came as basic side dishes made it disappear endlessly.

Flame-grilled bulgogi bibimbap and the sweet-and-spicy pairing
The charcoal-grilled bulgogi centered more on sweetness than the cockle rice — its sweet flavor mixed with the bibimbap seasoning, and alternating between it and the spicy cockle rice created exactly that spicy-sweet combo. One side slightly spicy, one side sweet, so switching back and forth between the two never got boring — exactly the kind of flavor women would love, I thought.

Hanwoo yukhoe mulhoe and the handmade tteokgalbi
On top of that, we also enjoyed the hanwoo yukhoe mulhoe and the handmade tteokgalbi we got through the review event.

The broth, made with a bone-based stock blended with six kinds of fruit, was sweet, tangy, and cold — a defining feature. That chilled, sweet-and-sour broth felt like it cleansed the palate between bites.

The review-event tteokgalbi turned out better than expected. I didn't realize it, but apparently the restaurant hand-minces the meat itself for these tteokgalbi — they were thick and full of meaty flavor, and I thought they'd be great served with rice if I ever brought my kid along. Tasting this, I felt it would be worth paying for, so on my next visit I'm planning to try the patented Cheomseongdae-shaped tteokgalbi, said to be National Treasure No. 31 in shape.

Even now, writing this post, I keep thinking about that kkomak bibimbap! Next time I need to properly try the rib stew too.
