Where Hwangnam Dukkebi Hwangnam Main Branch is, and its opening hours
Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant Hwangnam Main Branch is a Korean restaurant at 16 Poseok-ro 1050beon-gil, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea, right inside Hwangnidan-gil. It's open daily from 11:00 to 21:00 with last order at 20:30, and there's a break time from 15:00 to 17:00. Takeout, delivery, and reservations are all available, and there's kids' seating too.

While traveling around Gyeongju and looking for something to eat near Hwangnidan-gil, I went to Hwangnam Dukkebi's Hwangnam branch, which is known for its aged kimchi rib stew. It's easy to find since it's right inside Hwangnidan-gil, and the menu ranges from rib stew to raw beef cold soup, so it seemed like a good spot for a group to visit and share several dishes.

Hwangnam Dukkebi is known as a Hwangnidan-gil restaurant, and its signature dish is the aged kimchi rib stew made with domestic aged kimchi and tender pork ribs!! I was especially curious what it would taste like since the kimchi is apparently aged for a whopping 60 days in a jar.

Seats fill up fast even at opening: why you should reserve
Hwangnam Dukkebi is a place with waiting lines, so if you're planning to visit I'd recommend making a reservation beforehand. I went a little early to catch opening time, and it was relatively quiet then...?!?! But by the time I was eating, seats started filling up fast,,
Inside there were quite a few regular table seats as well as floor seating, and the floor seating area had that distinct Hwangnidan-gil vibe, which I liked.

What's on the menu at Hwangnam Dukkebi
The menu is more varied than expected — besides the signature rib stew, there's corn jeon (pan-fried corn pancake), yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef cold soup), yukhoe bibimbap, bulgogi, tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), and even a Cheomseongdae 7-piece set with cockles. If you're looking for dishes you can really only find in Gyeongju, this is a good reference. So if you want something a bit special along with a good Hwangnidan-gil meal, this place seems worth it.

Side dishes and the free buckwheat pancake
The side dishes were stir-fried fish cake, braised soy sauce beef, stir-fried kimchi, and dongchimi (radish water kimchi). A sip of dongchimi broth in between bites of the spicy, fiery rib stew really works well 👍 It cleans up the heat, so I kept reaching for it.

Also, ordering the rib stew gets you a free buckwheat pancake, which was good to nibble on while waiting for the stew.

What we ordered

How does the 60-day aged kimchi rib stew taste?
The aged kimchi rib stew finally arrived! It's made with domestic kimchi aged 60 days in a jar, and it was hearty just from the look of it. Along with the ribs and kimchi, there was shredded green onion, mushrooms, glass noodles, and even rice cakes, making for a pretty packed pot.

You can add extra ingredients, but personally the base amount was plenty, so I'd recommend trying it first before adding more. The ribs were tender and delicious once cooked just right, and the deep flavor of the aged kimchi combined with the spicy, fiery seasoning made it something you keep eating without getting sick of it.

It's even better when you eat the kimchi, shredded green onion, and glass noodles together with the meat rather than just eating the meat alone — the mix of textures makes it tastier. If you're looking for a filling meal in Gyeongju, this kind of dish seemed just right.

Yukhoe mulhoe on the side: how the cold soup pairs with the rib stew
It felt like a waste to only have the rib stew, so we also tried the yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef cold soup), and the portion was quite generous too. It's loaded with raw beef in a broth that seems soybean-paste-based with a slightly spicy kick.

Going from the hot, spicy rib stew to the cold, refreshing yukhoe mulhoe made for a really good combination. Noodles also came with it, so I tried dipping the noodles into the yukhoe mulhoe broth, and that was a treat too! There's plenty of raw beef, so ordering it alongside the rib stew seems like a good idea for sharing among several people.
