How long is the Saturday evening wait at Bareun Hwangso Gopchang?
Today I'm bringing you a review from a weekend evening visit to Bareun Hwangso Gopchang, a gopchang (beef intestine) restaurant near Sadang, with my husband!! We went without a reservation around 5:30pm on a Saturday. When we walked in there were still some seats open, but by around 6pm it was almost completely full,,!
This is the kind of place where weekend evenings can mean a wait, so if you want to eat with a bit of breathing room, I'd recommend going earlier :)

What the inside of Bareun Hwangso Gopchang looks like

Walking in, you'll find round tables lined up throughout. Exactly the kind of atmosphere for gopchang with a drink haha

The walls are covered in soju and beer bottle caps, which was kind of eye-catching!! It felt like a comfortable place to just come have a casual drink. We visited around 5:30pm on Saturday and got seated right away without a reservation. But really, about 30 minutes later, around 6pm, the place was almost completely full.

On a weekend evening, true to its reputation as a Sadang favorite, the place fills up fast!
Bareun Hwangso Gopchang menu and assorted gopchang price

The signature menu item is, of course, the assorted gopchang! It's ₩24,000 per serving, made up of gopchang + daechang (large intestine) + makchang (rectum, a fatty grilled offal cut). One serving is 250g, and it said the heart (yeomtong) and vegetable extras aren't counted in the weight — they're provided as a service.
My husband and I ordered two servings of assorted gopchang, one fried rice, and a bottle of Terra beer. The original plan was 'let's eat the two servings first, then order our favorite part as an extra dish!' But long story short... we couldn't order more haha. Two servings turned out to be way more filling than expected.
Which free side dishes come with the meal?

The side dishes weren't a huge variety, but they were exactly the kind that go well with gopchang. Especially this chives dish! It wasn't just plain seasoned chives — it had a bit of a sharp, pungent kick that went really well with the greasy gopchang!! My husband and I kept picking at it even before the gopchang arrived haha

Perilla leaves also came out. Wrapping a piece of gopchang in one helped cut through the richness nicely.

The dipping sauce had cheongyang chili (hot green chili) in it, giving it a salty, slightly spicy kick! My husband said the sauce was the real highlight here, and I agree!! Dipping the gopchang or daechang in it every once in a while kept things from feeling too greasy.
The free spicy fish cake soup (odeng-tang) steals the show

But honestly, we were already 100% satisfied before the gopchang even arrived, thanks to this fish cake soup,, At first I thought it'd just be some plain broth served as a formality, but once it started boiling, this spicy aroma hit us!!! The broth was hot and had a nice kick — I thought I could drink on this alone haha
A soup you could drink to even before the gopchang arrives... and there was a ton of fish cake in it too,, I kept sipping the broth all the way through finishing the gopchang

So we immediately ordered a bottle of Terra too~!~ I can't drink since I'm pregnant, but for my husband who was craving a drink,, I unfortunately just had water, but seeing his face after a sip of the soup and a sip of beer gave me some vicarious satisfaction~!~!~! When will I get to drink again,,
Two servings of assorted gopchang at Bareun Hwangso Gopchang

Finally, the two servings of assorted gopchang arrived! Doesn't it look pretty generous even in the photo? Gopchang, daechang, makchang, plus heart, onion, potato, chives!! And there were rice cakes too!!

On the wall at Sadang Bareun Hwangso Gopchang, there were photos showing which cut is gopchang, which is daechang, and which is makchang. Even first-timers to Sadang beef gopchang shouldn't get confused about the parts!

The gopchang was browned nicely on the outside and had a nutty flavor inside. It wasn't chewy when bitten into, and that nutty flavor really came through, which I liked. The heart, on the other hand, was relatively clean-tasting and chewy, perfect to have between bites of the richer cuts. Ordering the assorted platter meant each part had a different texture, so we never got bored eating.

The daechang's charm is definitely its richness... it had a nutty flavor that spread through your mouth, and I liked it best paired with chives. Actually, daechang I've had elsewhere always felt like it was just greasy, so it was kind of my last choice — but this one was more like crispy-outside-tender-inside style,, insane(ly good)

The makchang had more chew than the gopchang or daechang, good to have in between other bites! Makchang is actually my favorite ❤
The gopchang comes already fully cooked, and the staff mixes it right on the table so it's ready to eat!!
Potatoes and rice cakes grilled with the gopchang

The onion and potato served alongside were surprisingly delicious too. Especially the potato!! Grilled together with the gopchang fat, it gets golden and nutty on the outside — I kept reaching for it haha

The chives were also grilled on the pan together, and eating them with the gopchang was such a great match. Eating gopchang alone can get a little greasy, but the chives cut right through that.

I also dipped it into the cheongyang chili sauce again — salty and slightly spicy, a great combo with the gopchang.
Finishing with 4,000-won fried rice

If you've had gopchang, you've got to have the fried rice too, right...? No matter how full I am, I can't skip this haha. The fried rice is ₩4,000! It had plenty of dried seaweed flakes and the seasoning was evenly mixed in, giving it a nutty, salty flavor. You could add as much mayonnaise as you wanted!

Adding mayonnaise made it even richer and tastier

This is truly the kind of flavor that keeps going in even when you're already full... After the assorted gopchang, we were already pretty full, so we hesitated over whether to order fried rice — but we'd have regretted skipping it haha. We scraped the plate clean to the very end :)
Is Bareun Hwangso Gopchang worth it for gopchang in Sadang?
It's been a while since my husband and I had gopchang in Sadang, and it was really satisfying. What stuck with me the most was
- The two servings of assorted gopchang being more generous than expected
- The complimentary spicy fish cake soup
- The sharp, pungent chives that paired so well with the gopchang
- The friendly staff
- The fried rice at the end rounding out a satisfying meal
Those were the highlights. And the staff were really kind, which made the whole meal a pleasant experience from start to finish :)
If you want to try a bit of everything like we did, I'd recommend starting with the assorted gopchang! On Saturday evening the place was nearly full by around 6pm, so if you're planning a weekend visit, going a bit earlier is a good idea. If you're near Sadang Station looking for a spot to have gopchang with a drink, Bareun Hwangso Gopchang is well worth a visit :)
