Solo dining seat, Vietnamese pho and crab fried rice: Saeng Augustine

In short

Saeng Augustine Hapjeong Branch is a Vietnamese and Thai restaurant in the basement of Mecenatpolis near Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. Sitting at the solo dining seat, the writer ordered Vietnamese pho for ₩13,000 and shrimp crab fried rice for ₩16,000, and loved the pairing of wide rice noodles with fried rice loaded with crab meat. With a one-person set menu available, it's an easy place to visit alone.

The path from Hapjeong Station to Mecenatpolis

It's right next to the escalator on the Olive Young side, so it's easy to find even for first-timers, and it's also popular with office workers dining solo.

Vietnamese pho ordered for solo dining

Vietnamese pho ₩13,000, shrimp crab fried rice ₩16,000.

Table setting with Vietnamese pho and shrimp crab fried rice

I wanted to eat both pho and fried rice, so after some deliberation over the pho I ordered the Vietnamese pho, plus the fluffy shrimp crab fried rice.

A bowl of clear-broth Vietnamese pho

There are two types of pho — Thai pho and Vietnamese pho — I went with the Vietnamese version. A clean broth that's hard for anyone to dislike!!!

Wide rice noodles and bean sprouts

The noodles weren't thin ones that break easily — they were wide rice noodles, so the texture really comes through, plus crunchy bean sprouts. A truly legendary pho.

The meat in the pho seemed to have a slight direct-flame sear, so it had a nutty flavor with no greasiness at all — I could scoop it up with the broth again and again without getting tired of it,

Lifting up a piece of pho meat

There were quite a few other solo diners at other tables too, and pretty much every table had pho on it — Saeng Augustine's pho really is great in both taste and quality.

Cabbage pickles and radish pickles served alongside

There were also cabbage pickles and radish pickles served alongside, perfect for cleansing your palate in between bites.

Shrimp crab fried rice with visible crab meat

A plate of shrimp crab fried rice

Next up, the shrimp crab fried rice I'd been wanting to try. Usually at other pho places I've been to, you can't spot a single piece of crab meat in the crab fried rice,

but Saeng Augustine, a Mecenatpolis favorite, is different. At a glance you can see it's packed with shrimp and crab meat, and the portion is generous — not greasy at all, just clean and light.

A spoonful of fried rice lifted up

When pho alone feels like something's missing but you're not in the mood for fried food, ordering the shrimp crab fried rice gives you great balance.
