Looking for a quiet omakase in Gongdeok
I was hunting for a quiet omakase spot to celebrate my sibling passing their grad school entrance exam, and that's how I found Jeulgeoun Maeumeuro in Gongdeok haha
I've been to quite a few omakase places around Yeouido, Gwanghwamun, and Gangnam, and I'd heard this one was great value among the mid-tier places, so I was curious.

The exterior really felt like a place only insiders would know about. Even the entrance wasn't flashy at all, which made it feel more like a secret hideout,,,
When you open the door, photos of the chefs themselves greet you, which somehow makes the place feel even more trustworthy...? (guess they're confident in their food) (or maybe it's more like being greeted in person ><)

Bar seat spacing and the private room's vibe
The first thing I noticed walking in was how spacious the seat spacing was! Even though it's bar seating, you don't really notice the person next to you, and the atmosphere lets you enjoy the course privately!

(The individual bag lockers were nice and roomy too~~)
With the wood-toned counter and calm lighting, it seemed great for a birthday or anniversary meal! And if you look closely, there's also a separate private room, which looked good for family gatherings or group get-togethers. A clean atmosphere you could bring anyone important to without hesitation★
Two menu options: sashimi and sushi omakase
Let's take a look at the menu first!

There's a wide variety of drinks too, and you can choose between the sashimi and sushi omakase depending on your taste! We went with the lunch sushi omakase flow!
The flow of the lunch sushi omakase course
Today's order — lunch sushi omakase

(Started with a cold glass of Ebisu draft beer haha)

The first dish came out feeling like a small cold soy noodle soup (kongguksu), and it was a fun, unexpected way to gently open up the palate!

Next came a hoemuchim (raw fish salad) of smoked Spanish mackerel with shiso leaf, and as the smoky aroma lingered and then the shiso scent wrapped around it, I thought — ah, this is exactly the kind of detail that sets it apart from entry-level omakase!
Next up was braised octopus and chawanmushi (steamed egg custard). The stone octopus had a moist sauce, not chewy at all, with a sweet umami that stimulated the tongue, while the chawanmushi was soft and warm, settling the stomach comfortably in between.

The suimono (clear soup) settled the stomach further~ (love the tissue for your fingers on the left~)
The balance of shari and neta
Then the sushi started coming out one piece at a time, and I finally understood why people talk about the shari (vinegared rice) here!
The seasoning wasn't faint, but it also didn't overpower the neta (topping) — the balance with every single piece was perfect! (that sushi was seriously so good ㅜ)

The clean, light white fish had such a tidy aged flavor that the opening flow felt really well put together.
(Sushi with shiso) The way it kept refreshing the palate in between really showed off the chef's sense.
Sweet shrimp
Tuna ㅜㅜㅜ look at that marbling ㅜㅜ

Seaweed ++ a bite where rich sea urchin (uni) meets nutty flavor together!

Blue-backed fish came out too, and that's a topping that can turn fishy if it's even slightly off, you know? But here the aroma was alive without being overwhelming haha

Kinmedai maki, futomaki, and eel
Kinmedai (golden eye snapper) maki,,,,, seriously unreal,,,,,, just from the photo you can tell 'ah, this can't possibly taste bad,' right? (forgot the name) The sweet seaweed, kinmedai, and shari combination worked so well I instantly understood why this is so popular;;;; (obsessed)

A futomaki that looked like a birthday cake, yay!

The sushi finished with eel! The sauce was sweet and the flesh was soft, wrapping up the course on a happy note.

Dessert and portions — how were they?
Dessert was an egg-only castella and melon, ending things on a refreshing note~~! By the time dessert was done I was seriously so full. (Even my sibling, who eats a whole pound of samgyeopsal, said they were full — that says it all) Both flavor and portion size, this omakase nails both!
What kind of day is this Gongdeok omakase good for
Overall, Jeulgeoun Maeumeuro in Gongdeok had it all — the quiet atmosphere, the spacious seating, and the tidy sushi lineup.
For a family gathering, a birthday dinner, or a quiet meal with someone important, I think it's worth quietly saving 'Gongdeok omakase' for later. I'm planning to come back myself! Strongly recommend for anyone in Gongdeok looking for a refined mid-tier omakase!
