Hapjeong shabu-shabu restaurant with a rice porridge add-on: Nahonsha

In short

Nahonsha is a solo shabu-shabu and sukiyaki restaurant a 7-minute walk from Hapjeong Station Exit 7 in Mapo, Seoul. The mala shabu-shabu costs 15,900 won, and adding rice porridge for 4,000 won brought the solo meal at a window-view seat to 19,900 won, with the vegetable and meat portions sized right for one person. The mala broth at Nahonsha was spicy in a tasty rather than punishing way, good with the self-serve peanut sauce and easy to finish off with the porridge.

Today's Hapjeong spot is a shabu-shabu place near Hapjeong Station, Nahonsha. It's got a great atmosphere for a Hapjeong date, but it's also a solid spot for solo dining in Hapjeong — let me walk you through my mala shabu-shabu solo dining experience at Nahonsha in detail :)

Where is Nahonsha in Hapjeong, and what are its hours?

Nahonsha is a 7-minute walk from Hapjeong Station Exit 7. Hours are weekdays 11:30–21:00, Saturdays 12:00–21:00, closed Sundays, with a break time from 15:00 to 18:00.

I visited in the evening and the combination of the trees and pretty lighting was gorgeous.

After looking over the various shabu-shabu and sukiyaki menu options, I headed inside.

Inside Nahonsha: the window-view solo seats

The tables inside Nahonsha are arranged in a way that works well for both solo diners and couples on a date.

The window seats looking out onto the street were especially pretty..💖

I sat at a window-view seat, which turned out to be a perfect spot for solo dining.. The window view was so pretty, and there's a solo-sized shabu-shabu pot.. (If you're looking for a good solo dining spot in Hapjeong!! This is it..💕)

There's a phone stand for solo diners, so you can watch YouTube while eating, and there's chili and peanut sauce right next to it that goes great with the shabu-shabu. haha

I loved it so much..💖

Ta-da!

Why order the mala shabu-shabu at Nahonsha?

There are lots of shabu-shabu broth types — clear broth, spicy broth, miso — but I'd never seen mala shabu-shabu before, and I'd read another blogger's review saying the mala shabu was delicious, so I ordered it too! First up came the mala broth, loaded with spicy chili peppers.

So spicy~~

Then came the meat along with a variety of vegetables — bok choy, cabbage, mushrooms, sweet pumpkin, and more.

Wow.. it was so generous.. Before it arrived I was wondering if I should order more meat, but it turned out to be exactly the right amount for one person..💕

How to eat Nahonsha's mala shabu-shabu, and how spicy is it?

The staff were especially kind and walked me through exactly how to eat it, step by step. First, put all the vegetables into the broth.

Once it's bubbling away, add the meat and eat.💕 Ta-da!

The mala broth wasn't punishingly spicy — it was more like pleasantly spicy. It felt like a slightly lighter version of mala tang!! Of the sauces on the side, the peanut sauce was delicious because it balanced out the spiciness of the mala broth. If you order the mala shabu, definitely eat it with the peanut sauce!!

Is the 4,000-won rice porridge add-on worth it?

The mala shabu doesn't come with rice on the side — it comes with noodles instead. But I'm a rice person.. whenever I eat something, I have to finish with rice, so I added porridge as an extra order! The porridge came with some fairly large-cut vegetables, egg, and rice.

Porridge ingredients with vegetables, egg and rice

I put the porridge ingredients straight into the mala shabu broth, pressed them down, and stirred it all around — ta-da~ porridge, just like that.

I was full, but.. the finishing move for shabu-shabu really is porridge..👍🏻💖 (I noticed diners at another table doing the same thing — shabu-shabu, then porridge. haha)
