Danyang restaurant with a 15-minute weekend wait: Heukmaneul Boribap

In short

Heukmaneul Boribap is a barley rice (boribap) and black garlic Korean restaurant near Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. Arriving around 2pm on a weekend, we signed the waitlist, waited about 15 minutes, then used the table tablet to order two jeyuk boribap (spicy pork and barley rice) set meals, one extra plate of suyuk (boiled pork), and Dangoeul Sobaeksan makgeolli. Five kinds of namul, a soybean paste stew with blue crab, and sweet black garlic pork made Heukmaneul Boribap a filling late lunch.

My husband and I went on a trip to Danyang. No trip is complete without exploring the local market, so as soon as we arrived we walked around Gugyeong Market and then stopped for a late lunch at Heukmaneul Boribap (흑마늘 보리밥), a well-known restaurant near the market.

How long is the weekend wait at 2pm?

After parking at the Gugyeong Market public parking lot, it's about a 5-minute walk to Heukmaneul Boribap and its neighbor, a black garlic ssambap restaurant. Both are pretty well known, and maybe because it was the weekend, even close to 2pm both places had a wait. We decided to go for the barley rice place since the wait looked shorter.

You write your name on the waitlist and they call you when your turn comes up. There was a real mix of groups, including a big family of about 14 people with kids. Luckily we didn't wait too long — about 15 minutes before we were seated.

Inside, the restaurant is spacious and clean, with group seating well set up. We ordered comfortably using the tablet at the table.

The full table: two jeyuk boribap sets plus extra suyuk

We ordered two jeyuk boribap (barley rice with stir-fried spicy pork) set meals, one extra bossam (boiled pork), and Dangoeul Sobaeksan makgeolli. The side dishes came out fast..!!

Napa cabbage kimchi, seasoned garlic, and quail eggs

Napa cabbage kimchi, seasoned garlic, and quail eggs came as side dishes. The kimchi was tasty, and as always the garlic side dish had that addictive flavor — so good.

Five kinds of namul (seasoned vegetable side dishes) came out, perfect for mixing with the barley rice. Add the stew and the main dishes — bossam and stir-fried jeyuk — and the table was completely full.

Soybean paste stew with blue crab

Next came the soybean paste stew (doenjang jjigae). It was generously packed with soft tofu and zucchini, and the crab inside, though small, was full of meat. The crab gave it great savory depth, and it was pleasantly spicy and earthy — a stew that goes really well with mixed rice too.

The barley rice was fluffy and came with a generous amount of namul, and the seasoning wasn't too strong, so I could pile it on.

Dangoeul Sobaeksan makgeolli with barley rice

Dangoeul Sobaeksan makgeolli — low alcohol and smooth in taste, perfect for a light daytime drink. Barley rice with makgeolli..👍🏼 my favorite combination.

I loaded the barley rice with namul, added a bit of the soybean stew, some gochujang, and a drizzle of sesame oil, then mixed it all together — the barley's plump, springy texture really stood out.

Black garlic sauce jeyuk: sweet, not spicy

Stir-fried pork (jeyuk) generously coated in Danyang's specialty black garlic sauce. The pork was thick-cut with just the right amount of fat, so the juices were tender. The sauce soaked in well and was sweet rather than spicy, so it seemed like something even young kids could enjoy.

A variety of wrap greens came out too — lettuce, perilla leaves, kale, and angelica leaves — great for making wraps.

It's also delicious as a topping over the mixed rice, or mixed right in with the rice.

Eating a bit of the garlic side dish between bites cuts the richness and makes everything taste even better.

The extra order of black garlic suyuk

The bossam we ordered extra came topped with plenty of black garlic sauce, along with a side of seasoned dried radish. The bossam itself was clean-tasting with no gamey smell, and the sweet, non-spicy, non-harsh black garlic sauce paired really well with it.

The fat ratio was just right, making it soft, and the garlic sauce added even more moisture and flavor... ✨
