Danyang restaurant near Gyeonggyeong Market, 20-min weekend wait: pork

In short

Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap is a black garlic ssambap (wrap rice) Korean restaurant near Gyeonggyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. On a weekend lunch visit, there were 5 teams ahead and about a 20-minute wait before ordering the boiled pork ssambap set for two via kiosk, which arrived with 6 side dishes, a soybean paste stew with a whole blue crab, and garlic rice. Turnover is fast so the wait isn't too bad, but families with kids or elderly members should factor in the queue.

Main photo of Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap near Gyeonggyeong Market

Today I visited Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap, a restaurant near Gyeonggyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. I'm a Korean food person through and through — ssambap (leaf-wrapped rice), barley rice, bibimbap, I love them all — so when I saw the boiled pork ssambap on the menu, I couldn't just walk past. Every single dish here was genuinely delicious, so if you're heading to Danyang, I really recommend stopping by. Let's get into it ~~

Hours and break time

Operating hours are 10:30–20:00, with a break time from 14:30–16:00 and last order at 19:20. They might close early if ingredients run out, so it's worth calling ahead to check!

Where to park?

Parking is available at the riverside free lot (38 Subyeon-ro, Danyang Subyeon Special Stage), a 5-minute walk away, or the Gyeonggyeong Market public free lot, just a 1-minute walk. We parked at the riverside lot and strolled over!

How long is the weekend lunch wait?

The sign is huge, so we spotted it right away. Weekend lunch is peak time and the place was packed, so there was a wait — 5 teams were ahead of us, and we waited about 20 minutes before getting in. The staff clear tables quickly so turnover is good and the wait doesn't drag on too much, but if you're with kids or elderly family members, it might still be tough, so I'd gently suggest the black garlic barley rice place nearby instead!

While waiting, I checked out the photos on the wall. Plenty of well-known visitors have come through and it's been on TV multiple times, so the taste is already vouched for — all you have to do is enjoy it! Yay ~

Three menu options, ordered by kiosk

There are exactly three menu options: squid ssambap, spicy pork ssambap, and boiled pork ssambap. They're all crowd-pleasers that pretty much everyone likes, which makes choosing tough...! Because they all look delicious ~ ~ After a long deliberation, we ordered the boiled pork ssambap for two, said to be the most popular. You order easily through the kiosk at your table! It's not a big place — about 9 tables — but they're spaced fairly wide apart, and the food comes out really fast, so you can eat comfortably.

The boiled pork ssambap set for two

The set composition is really satisfying — 6 side dishes plus main boiled pork, soybean paste stew, and garlic rice, and every single item is seasoned just right and genuinely tasty. Nothing overpowers anything else, so it all comes together harmoniously. The garlic-boiled pork has some parts with sauce and some without, so you can eat it however you like, and the garlic rice doesn't actually contain garlic pieces — it just has a subtle garlic aroma and flavor.

Soybean paste stew with a whole blue crab

The soybean paste stew has a whole blue crab in it — the meat was substantial and the stew was spicy-hot, so it was really delicious. None of the side dishes are heavily seasoned, so nothing tastes too sharp and you can finish everything without leftovers. The kids and elderly folks at the next table were eating well too. Truly a flavor that people of all ages can enjoy!! It's the kind of place that satisfies everyone's palate, not just Korean food lovers, so I really recommend stopping by if you're in Danyang. If I ever come back to Danyang, I'm definitely visiting again! Everyone's favorite spot ~

The black garlic story that makes it taste even better

  • The black garlic used in every dish is made in-house.
  • The garlic is kept warm in a rice cooker for 15 days, then dried for a few days, giving it a chewy texture — apparently even people who normally dislike garlic get hooked on it and become regulars.
  • The extract that comes out as the garlic transforms into black garlic isn't thrown away — it's added when cooking the rice, making it even more nutritious.
  • The side dishes are made by hand with the customers' health in mind, kept lightly seasoned rather than heavily salted.
