Daehung-dong pork bone stew for a hangover in Daejeon: Yeonam
In short
Yeonam Charcoal-Grilled Pork Backbone & Gamjatang is a gamjatang (pork bone stew) and charcoal-grilled pork backbone restaurant in Daehung-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, a short walk from exit B-8 of the Jungangno Station underground arcade. As a hangover cure, the small gamjatang costs 34,000 won and came with two bowls of rice, and since sujebi (hand-torn dough) and glass noodles are included as standard, it was filling without a single add-on. The siraegi (dried radish greens) and sujebi at Yeonam were the real highlight — so much so that there was no room left for the fried rice finish.

The weather's been getting cooler and I started craving soupy food. It's been a while since I had a really filling, hearty gamjatang! Plus I drank the night before, so this was hangover food. Yeonam Charcoal-Grilled Pork Backbone & Gamjatang is famous for its charcoal-grilled pork backbone, so I went back and forth, but I stuck to my guns and went with the gamjatang.

Where is Yeonam gamjatang in Daehung-dong, and what are the hours?

From exit B-8 of Jungangno Station's underground arcade, walk straight toward Uriui Park, then take the alley next to Jinmi Ogyeopsal — Yeonam Charcoal-Grilled Pork Backbone & Gamjatang is right there!

What we ordered: small gamjatang at 34,000 won
Charcoal-grilled pork backbone, gamjatang, potato pancake — I wanted it all! I kept going back and forth on what to order.

First time I've seen the paper cup tucked inside like that. We ordered gamjatang (small) for ₩34,000, a Pepsi Zero for ₩2,000, and two bowls of rice at ₩1,000 each!!

The side dishes came out after we ordered. The stir-fried anchovies were sweet and salty, seriously so good haha!

One pot with sujebi and glass noodles already included
So filling just to look at!! Gamjatang is great for sharing with a group, and I love that you keep simmering it right on the table so it stays warm. Once it arrived, the pot was packed with meat, potatoes, glass noodles, and sujebi! I almost added extra noodles when ordering but held off — turns out sujebi and glass noodles come included as standard, which was such a nice surprise!

Perilla-seed broth and meaty pork backbone at Yeonam
The broth was spicy but with a deep, savory base, and the perilla powder really came through with a nutty richness!! I love perilla powder so much — it has that thick, nutty flavor that makes everything taste deeper than if you just ate it plain. The meat was big and had plenty of flesh on it, and after simmering a good while it fell right off the bone, easy to eat! Dipping it in the mustard sauce that came with it was so good!

The siraegi that beat the meat
The potatoes cooked up soft and mealy — mashing them together with meat and rice was absolute honey. And the siraegi (dried radish greens) was the real kick. Simmered until soft and soaked with the rich broth, it went perfectly with the meat, and wrapped in rice it was seriously, seriously good...! Honestly the siraegi was better than the meat. Good enough that I wished there was a refill option. Seriously, they should offer siraegi refills!

The great thing is you can turn the heat off for a bit once it's boiling hard, then simmer it again. The broth gets richer the longer it goes, and the ingredients soak up more seasoning, so it stays good and warm right to the end~

Why we skipped the fried rice finish
I love glass noodles so much I think everyone just gave theirs to me haha. But this time the sujebi was genuinely the better bite! I left the glass noodles and finished off all the sujebi haha, so chewy and soft. We were supposed to finish with fried rice at the end, but the portion was so huge we were way too full and couldn't manage it ㅠㅠ Should've finished off that thick, rich broth with fried rice...! So disappointing.

You can see how big the meat pieces are... now I'm curious about the steamed pork bones (ppyeojjim) too... every other table was eating that... maybe I should've ordered that instead? But the gamjatang was delicious too.

Inside Yeonam: atmosphere and how long you wait
When we first walked in it was so crowded I couldn't even take a photo, and it was just as packed when we left. Basically a full house! I get why it's so popular haha. Next time I'll try the steamed pork bones. So curious about it now lol.

If you're craving something hot and soupy, or want a hearty meal to share with a group, I'd recommend Yeonam Charcoal-Grilled Pork Backbone & Gamjatang as a go-to spot in Daehung-dong, Daejeon! If you're already a fan of gamjatang, it's worth a visit whenever you want a solid meal or a warm bowl of soup~
