I visited Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong, a great spot to pick up a Jeju souvenir — soft, not-too-sweet handmade oranda (Korean sweet crackers) and gwajul (traditional fried dough sweets). The name is fun, right? Cheongchuni Oranda~~ I wondered if it was run by silver-haired elders, but it turned out to be an oranda place where young Jeju people make everything by hand.

Which Dongmun Market gate should I use?

The Cheongchuni Oranda shop is close to Dongmun Market Gates 2 and 9. There's a public parking lot right near Gate 9, and it usually gives 30 minutes free, so it's convenient.

Handmade oranda and gwajul made by young Jeju people

Young people from Jeju put their heart into making oranda and gwajul by hand. When I arrived, there were some older ladies who seemed to be on a Jeju trip together. They greeted the owner warmly, then told their friend next to them that the oranda here wasn't too sweet and was delicious, recommending it as they bought some.

I wondered if they sold donuts too, but nope — it was oranda. Haha.

Gift sets vs. bulk packs — what's the difference?

The friendly owner first asked whether I was buying it as a gift or to eat myself. When I said I love oranda and wanted to eat it myself, she told me gift sets are for gifting, while the cheaper bulk oranda packs are better for eating yourself.

There are 5 types of oranda: gamtae (sea mustard), mixed nuts, manong (garlic), yuzu, and Udo peanut. Might as well mix a few and taste them all~

How was the texture when I tasted it?

They had samples ready so you could taste before choosing~ and oh, it was delicious. Most oranda I've had before is hard, which can feel like a bit much, but the ones here aren't hard at all — they're soft. The yuzu oranda was pleasantly soft and crisp at once, with the moist yuzu flavor spreading through your whole mouth. Spot on.

This soft, not-hard way of making it is apparently Cheongchuni Oranda's own technique. I think my parents would enjoy it too, so it seems like a good Dongmun Market gift item. The price is reasonable, the portions are generous, and on top of that it's lightweight~ When I asked about storage, they said it keeps for a month at cool room temperature out of direct sunlight.

The flavors I chose: gamtae and yuzu

Of all of them, our favorite oranda was the gamtae (sea mustard) one... haha.

And I also picked the yuzu oranda, which was delicious. The moistness and yuzu aroma are top-notch~

Eating it after bringing it back to Seoul, it's even more delicious.

The soft texture of the oranda pairs really well with the gamtae flavor — both the texture and taste are great. What a treat... haha.
