Sokcho bakery with free tasting and ₩1,000 jjondeugi: Bultan Gamja

In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a potato bread and jjondeugi (chewy dried-squid snack) bakery on Hagsapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. Samples are set out in the store, so you can taste before choosing, and jjondeugi is sold by the piece at 1,000 won each in squid, dakgangjeong (sweet fried chicken) and snow crab flavors. For the drive home I bought a 4-pack of potato bread and a 12-piece jjondeugi set — an easy car snack that doubles as a Sokcho souvenir.

Before heading home from our Sokcho trip, I stopped by Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store to pick up some souvenirs. They have jjondeugi (chewy squid-shaped snack) and potato bread that you can only find in Sokcho, so it seemed like a great pick for a simple travel souvenir or a snack to bring home!

The exterior was so eye-catching that the atmosphere felt different even before I stepped inside! Great for photos, and it has a charm that's different from your typical cafe or restaurant these days. Perfect for profile-pic-worthy shots with friends hahaha, seems like it'd make for a fun memory :)

What is the inside of the store like?

Stepping inside, the vibe was really nice too, decorated in a cute, detailed way. It was fun just looking around at all the little decorative pieces and interior touches placed here and there :) There were quite a lot of customers in the store that day, so unfortunately I didn't get to sit down and enjoy the space. Still, the interior was so cute and pretty that even a quick look around was enjoyable.

My fiancé was so sleepy from the long drive that I popped one straight into his mouth hahahahaha

  • Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread 4-pack — ₩10,000
  • Sokcho Jjondeugi set (12 pieces) — ₩10,000

I ended up buying these two items, and jjondeugi turned out to be perfect for eating while driving! Totally recommend it 👍

A chewy piece of Sokcho jjondeugi

True to its name, jjondeugi is chewy — but it's not just tough and rubbery, the flavor comes through more the longer you chew, which made it easy to keep grabbing one after another as a snack.

Cross-section of potato bread, chewy outside and soft inside

The potato bread had a chewy exterior and a soft interior, giving it that distinctive fluffy, plain potato texture. It chewed softly with a subtle potato flavor coming through :) Apparently Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread uses squid ink to give the bread its black color, capturing Sokcho's identity. The outside looks black, but inside it's a soft, chewy potato bread, making it a unique kind of Sokcho travel souvenir. If you're looking for a slightly different kind of souvenir in Sokcho, I'd recommend Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread and jjondeugi!
