In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a squid-ink potato bread bakery on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon, and the main branch of three stores around Sokcho Jungang Market. A box of 4 potato breads costs 10,000 won and a set of 12 jjondeugi (chewy dried squid snacks) also costs 10,000 won, both bought as travel gifts, with freshly baked bread on display inside the forest-view store. Both sets keep in the freezer and the store sits near the IC, making Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread an easy souvenir stop on the drive home.

Visit to Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store

To wrap up my Sokcho trip, I stopped by Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store to grab some gift food. There are three branches around Sokcho Jungang Market — Main, No.1, and No.2 — and I went to the Main Store. The name alone is unusual, but seeing it in person is even more surprising!

Interior of Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store

I came before hitting the IC to buy gift sets, but there were more people than I expected inside enjoying drinks and bread as a café visit. The interior was bigger and neater than I imagined.

Seating with a forest view at the bakery café

It's actually worth coming here to enjoy bread and drinks inside — the view is pretty too, haha. Quiet interior, forest view, and freshly baked bread — I'd recommend it as a bakery café too :)

How much is a potato bread 4-pack and a jjondeugi 12-pack?

  • Potato bread box (4 pieces)
  • Jjondeugi set (12 pieces)

Bultan Gamja Bread is a black potato bread made with squid ink. The outside is black and round like a stone, so at first glance you might wonder if it's even bread. A box of 4 costs 10,000 won, and a set of 12 jjondeugi costs 10,000 won.

Why potato bread and jjondeugi sets work as Sokcho souvenirs

Sokcho is famous for dakgangjeong, sundubu (soft tofu), and raw fish, but for a gift, the Bultan Gamja Bread and jjondeugi set is really perfect. It's not too expensive, and the unique look makes it fun for whoever receives it. Since potato itself is a representative Gangwon-do ingredient, it feels even cuter and more intriguing.

What the burnt potato bread tastes like: chewy crust, soft center

The outside is chewy, and the inside is soft — made from oven-roasted potato mashed with cream cheese and butter. The outside is coated with black beans and black sesame powder, giving it a nutty, savory flavor. It's not too sweet, so it's easy to eat without feeling heavy.

+ (The man in front of me asked if, instead of the pre-packed gift set, they could repack it with freshly baked bread. And they happily said yes! The owner was so kind!)

Can you see how chewy the outside looks? I also ate strawberry chapssaltteok (sticky rice cake) I bought at the Sokcho market alongside it, and the chewiness of the potato bread's crust wasn't inferior to the rice cake at all. So the quality exceeded what I expected 👍🏻

Freezer storage and getting there from the Sokcho IC

It can be frozen and just needs a quick microwave reheat, so you can take it home and enjoy it slowly — that's another plus. Travel souvenirs often have to be eaten up while you're still there, but here you don't have to worry about that 👏🏻 And since the Main Store is near the IC tollgate, it felt very convenient to pick up on the way home.

The three jjondeugi flavors at Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread

Jjondeugi comes in three flavors: snow crab, dakgangjeong, and squid. The size is just right to carry as a Sokcho travel gift, and having a variety of flavors makes it easy to share with several people. With 'Sokcho City' printed boldly on the package, it also doubles as a signature souvenir — good for gifting in every way :)

Final thoughts on Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store

If you're looking for gift food to close out a Sokcho trip, I'd recommend Bultan Gamja Bread. It's near Jungang Market, so it's easy to combine with a market visit, and a box of potato bread plus a set of jjondeugi makes a satisfying gift. If I need to buy another Sokcho gift set next time, I'd totally repurchase the potato bread with my own money!!! 👍🏻 (Kind of regretting only buying 1 box... it was so good I wanted to buy about 3 boxes...)
