In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon, with a pop-art graffiti exterior and a large parking lot out front. After trying the squid-ink, black sesame and black bean versions of bultan gamjappang (charred potato bread) from the tasting tray at the counter, we packed a 4-piece potato bread set and a 12-piece jjondeugi (chewy snack) set to share in the car. While looking for a memorably different souvenir dessert after a trip to Sokcho, I stopped by Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store. It's unlike the usual yellow potato bread you see everywhere, and between the vibe of the space, the free tastings, and the packaging, it turned out to be a spot I won't forget.

Free tastings at the counter: which potato bread to pick

Right by the entrance at Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is the counter, with free tasting bread set out on top so you can try before you buy. Once you step inside, it's a spacious, comfortable space with wood tones and warm lighting.

They said squid ink, black sesame, and black bean powder are used on the outside to recreate the look of an old-fashioned potato baked in a wood-fired oven. Ohh — it has such a clean, wholesome taste!! It's really good.

This is jjondeugi, a Sokcho specialty. There's also oranda (a crispy snack). They come individually wrapped in cute squid-character packaging, which seemed great for snacking or as a gift.

Packing the 4-piece potato bread and 12-piece jjondeugi sets

I packed a potato bread set and a jjondeugi set at Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store. The characters on the packaging are so cute haha.

This is the signature Bultan Gamja Bread 4-piece set.

Unlike ordinary yellow potato bread, this looks like it was just pulled out of an old-fashioned wood-fired oven. It's made with squid ink, black sesame, and black bean powder.

Individually plastic-wrapped dark potato bread

Opening the box, the potato breads are individually wrapped in plastic, which is hygienic and easy to carry. The outside is chewy with a nutty flavor, and the inside is a sweet, soft potato filling.

Individually packed jjondeugi 12-piece set

The 12 jjondeugi pieces are each individually wrapped, so they store neatly and are easy to share. The flavor is squid jjondeugi — that chewy, squid-like bite, I guess? My family members who like jjondeugi loved them. I personally think the potato bread is cleaner-tasting and more delicious.

We happily munched through them one by one in the car.

Is Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store worth a stop?
