Saturday-night beef restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, full by 8pm: Usijang

In short

Usijang Hoegwan is a beef and raw-beef-sashimi restaurant a 3-minute walk from Mapo Station in Seoul. Arriving at 7pm on a Saturday, the writer ordered the kkuri-sal perilla-leaf yukhoe-sashimi platter (55,000 won), clam beef soup with rice (14,000 won) and half-frozen slushy soju, and by 8pm every table at Usijang Hoegwan was taken. The beef quality and the deep, rich soup broth were both good enough to plan a return trip to this value-for-money beef spot near Mapo Station.

Today I'm introducing a restaurant near Mapo Station that I visited because I was craving yukhoe (raw beef) and yuksashimi (raw beef sashimi) with a glass of soju!

Where is Usijang Hoegwan, and what are its hours?

Usijang Hoegwan (우시장회관) is a beef restaurant at 15-10 Samgae-ro, 1F, Mapo-gu, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Mapo Station. It's open daily 10:00–22:00, with a break time of 15:00–17:00, last order at 21:30, and no regular closing days. There's parking for 2 cars in front of/beside the restaurant, but I'd recommend the Dohwa public parking lot (paid), a 5-minute walk away. Naver Reservation is also available.

Usijang Hoegwan🐂, a beef restaurant near Mapo Station, a 3-minute walk away. It's a beef spot where you can enjoy high-quality beef without breaking the bank — a satisfying lunch, or a great place for good beef and soju in the evening!

Entrance and sign of Usijang Hoegwan

In terms of location, it's a 3-minute walk from Mapo Station and a 10-minute walk from Gongdeok Station, so it's pretty accessible. If you're driving, there's parking in front of/beside the restaurant (2 spots), but the space is a bit tight, so I'd recommend using the Dohwa public parking lot (paid), a 5-minute walk from the restaurant, haha.

Arriving at 7pm on a Saturday: is there a wait?

I visited Usijang Hoegwan around 7pm on a Saturday, and there were already only a few seats left; by around 8pm it was completely full. If you're planning to go to Usijang Hoegwan near Mapo Station on a weekend evening, it's better to go a bit early.

It's such a well-known spot in the neighborhood for good-value beef that it's worth hurrying a little on weekend evenings~

Usijang Hoegwan menu and prices

The menu at Usijang Hoegwan really has it all — mixed beef platter sets, beef rib meat by itself, yukhoe and yuksashimi sets and à la carte options, boiled beef, hot pot, and other dishes perfect for evening drinking, plus beef soup, beef organ soup, and other hearty lunch options, haha.

Menu board and price list at Usijang Hoegwan

And above all — the prices are so reasonable! The 700g mixed beef platter set is under ₩70,000.... isn't that great value? ♥︎

Maybe because it's a beef restaurant near Mapo Station with both good quality and good prices, I saw all kinds of customers — couples, friends, families, and groups of older adults. In particular, I saw a lot of people in their 50s and 60s enjoying soju together, and I thought, this is a real neighborhood favorite!

What we ordered at Usijang Hoegwan

  • Kkuri-sal perilla-leaf yukhoe-sashimi platter — ₩55,000
  • Clam beef soup — ₩14,000
  • Soju — ₩5,000

We were craving yukhoe and yuksashimi that day, so we ordered the perilla-leaf yukhoe-sashimi platter, clam beef soup, and soju, haha.

Soju in a slushy, half-frozen state

The soju came out first! Wow, the soju alone was totally my thing... ♥︎ It wasn't just slightly chilled — it was properly slushy, like a slush drink. (Calling all slushy soju lovers.)

Kkuri-sal perilla-leaf yukhoe-sashimi platter, 55,000 won

Usijang Hoegwan's kkuri-sal perilla-leaf yukhoe-sashimi platter is ₩55,000 — yukhoe and yuksashimi wrapped in perilla leaves, served as a hearty spread with 7 side accompaniments. And here comes today's star, the perilla-leaf yukhoe-sashimi platter!

Full spread of the kkuri-sal perilla-leaf yukhoe-sashimi platter

Usijang's yukhoe and yuksashimi apparently use only No. 9-graded fresh Korean beef kkuri-sal (a specific cut) raised in a pristine region of Gangwon-do, slaughtered and prepared on the same day as a strict principle! You could really tell from the color alone how fresh it was ... ♥︎

The perilla-leaf yukhoe-sashimi platter came out generously arranged, with the yukhoe and yuksashimi meant to be wrapped in perilla leaves and enjoyed with 7 kinds of accompaniments,

Perilla leaves and the 7 side accompaniments

which meant today's soju was going to taste amazing ...><

First a bite of yukhoe~ then a bite of yuksashimi~

I tried it various ways with the different accompaniments, but honestly, the yukhoe-sashimi itself was such good quality meat that it was delicious no matter what combination I tried it with ㅠㅠㅠ♥︎

Yukhoe picked up with accompaniments

If you love yukhoe or yuksashimi, I really, really recommend Usijang Hoegwan's yukhoe-sashimi...!!!!

Clam beef soup, 14,000 won: rich broth even without the clams

Usijang Hoegwan's signature clam beef soup is ₩14,000, and both the broth and rice are refillable. My boyfriend can't eat clams, so they made it without clams for him. But even without the clams, the broth was so deep and rich... it just made the soju go down even more smoothly, haha.

The clam beef soup's broth is refillable, and the rice too, apparently. (Boss, at this rate you won't be making any money ...)

Is Usijang Hoegwan near Mapo Station worth it? Final verdict
