Lunch here was the Hwasae set of jjukkumi, beef belly and shrimp at 20,000 won per person plus cheese fried rice at 3,000 won, with side dishes you help yourself to from a self-serve bar. Traveling in Jeonju is full of things to see, but walking the alleys of Hanok Village and around Gyeonggijeon means walking, and walking, and walking some more. After all that, a spicy, filling meal starts to sound very good — which is when we headed to Jeonju Jjukkumi Sinhwa Ajung-ri Main Branch, a spot well known as a lunch place in the Ajung-ri area of Jeonju.

This Ajung-ri lunch favorite has been a local jjukkumi (baby octopus) specialist for 19 years. Beyond the deliciously spicy stir-fried octopus, the nutty fried rice they cook up at the end makes it a full, satisfying meal.

Why regulars order Jjukkumi Sinhwa to take home

Once you've tried it, the takeout jjukkumi — sold for almost half price — starts to sound tempting. We were still early in our Jeonju trip, so we figured we'd grab some takeout next time we're back.

It was a slightly early lunch hour, and the place was already packed. A little later and we would have had to wait. There's a spacious hall and a separate private room too, which makes it a good spot for family gatherings or company dinners.

There happened to be a soccer match that day, and even though Jeonju World Cup Stadium is a good 20 minutes away, people were making the trip just to eat here — proof enough that this is a well-known local favorite.

Banchan (side dishes) are unlimited from the self-serve bar. They were tasty enough that I made several trips back and forth, haha.😁

What comes in the Hwasae set: jjukkumi, beef belly and shrimp

We ordered the Hwasae, the combo of jjukkumi, beef belly (usamgyeop) and shrimp, along with a bowl of rice and the cheese fried rice, bracing ourselves for a bit of heat.

The crunchy bean sprouts and the bean sprout soup were both little treats — happy flavors all the way down.😁

Pickled mushrooms, salad and various other banchan paired perfectly with the spicy octopus, each bringing out the best in the other.

Finally, the Hwasae arrived at the table: beef belly neatly laid over the spicy-dressed octopus, topped with thick shrimp. Just the sight of it was mouthwatering.

Fresh, premium-grade octopus marinated in 100% chili powder for its heat, served alongside generous beef belly and big shrimp — suddenly I was starving all over again.

At this Ajung-ri lunch spot, the staff cook everything for you, so all you have to do is wait for the octopus to be expertly stir-fried and dig in.

As the octopus, beef belly and shrimp got gently tossed together on the griddle to cook evenly, a fragrant, spicy smell rose up — I had to swallow my saliva more than once waiting.

Jjukkumi can turn tough if overcooked, but here it was pulled off the heat at just the right moment, plump and springy, right as we were ready to start eating.

They didn't forget the steamed egg custard for those who need a break from the spice — light and fluffy, one soft, savory spoonful was perfect for cooling the mouth down between bites of spicy octopus.

Finally, steam rising off the griddle, we tried our first bite of the well-cooked octopus.

Just as you'd expect, the jjukkumi had that plump, chewy texture, deliciously spicy in an addictive way that kept our chopsticks moving nonstop.

The big shrimp had firm, springy flesh, and the more you chewed, the sweeter it got — such a good match with the spicy octopus sauce.

The house-made garlic sauce, made with Korean garlic and fruit, was especially special — a flavor you won't find elsewhere. We kept dipping and nodding at each other, mutually agreeing: this place is legit!😁

How to eat the jjukkumi at its best: staff tips and garlic sauce

Jjukkumi Sinhwa shares a few tips for eating the octopus at its best:

  • The octopus dressed in that rich sauce is already delicious on its own, but
  • wrapping ssamjang radish, bean sprouts, octopus and meat together in a perilla leaf is a fantastic combo,
  • and pairing it with the garlic sauce — mayonnaise blended with fresh Korean garlic and sweet-tart apple — is the best.

Finally, the moment arrives to mix up the spicy leftover sauce into cheese fried rice! Don't skip the fried rice at this Ajung-ri, Jeonju favorite!

They stir-fry the rice right on the griddle with the leftover octopus sauce mixed in. The moment you scoop up a spoonful, the cheese stretches out in long strings — spicy sauce plus nutty cheese makes it nearly impossible to put your spoon down.
