Busan Chinese restaurant mala dumplings: Songjeong Dol Jjamppong

In short

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is a Chinese restaurant near Songjeong Beach in Haeundae-gu, Busan, serving jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) on hot stone plates. On a return visit the writer ordered the stone-plate jjamppong (medium, spice level 2) with a mini glutinous-rice tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) set plus mala fried dumplings, and enjoyed the smoky noodles, the scorched rice crust left on the stone plate, the crisp-chewy breaded tangsuyuk and the deeply mala dumplings. Songjeong Dol Jjamppong fills up fast, so checking Catch Table first is a must.

Peak vacation season is basically over but Busan's beaches are still packed with tourists haha. Gwangalli and Haeundae get all the attention, but Songjeong Beach is popular too! And unlike your average jjamppong or jajangmyeon place, Songjeong has a spot that serves them sizzling on a stone plate!! I'd been before and loved it so much I went back — this is my review of Songjeong Dol Jjamppong. Let's get into it 💨

There's a break time, but they close early if ingredients run out, so I'd recommend calling ahead haha.

There are two ways in — through the main entrance of the restaurant (right), or through the building's lobby and up the elevator to the 1st floor (left). Whichever's easier for you haha.

Is Songjeong Dol Jjamppong baby-friendly? Inside the restaurant

Inside, there's a waiting area and plenty of 4-person tables, plus a baby chair and a microwave for baby food. It was so crowded I couldn't get interior shots (proof it's a real Songjeong hotspot), but there was still enough seating for us.

There's a baby chair,

Microwave for baby food inside Songjeong Dol Jjamppong

and also a microwave for baby food, so I'd highly recommend this place if you're dining in Songjeong with a baby!! And after the meal they even give you yogurt for dessert — such a great restaurant .. 💗

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong menu and spice levels

Here's the Songjeong Dol Jjamppong menu. From the signature stone-plate jjamppong and stone-plate jajangmyeon to sweet and sour pork, dumplings, and discounted set menus — there's a lot to choose from!

Also, both the stone-plate jjamppong and jajangmyeon let you choose your spice level, FYI! I ordered the 'stone-plate jjamppong (medium, spice level 2) + mini sweet and sour pork set, and mala fried dumplings'!

Ordered set menu details

Green onion kimchi at the self-serve bar

The self-serve bar was set up like in the photo — and there was green onion kimchi, of all things …?! Eating stone-plate jajangmyeon with green onion kimchi, how good must that be .. 💗 If you order the jajangmyeon, make sure to grab some green onion kimchi!!!!

Also, there's a handmade cheong ade (fruit syrup soda) event running for Naver reviews, so be sure to join in ~!

How spicy is the stone-plate jjamppong at level 2?

Spice level 2 at Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is a level any buldak (fire chicken) lover can handle without much trouble haha. Since Songjeong Dol Jjamppong makes everything to order, it can take a bit of time! After waiting, our stone-plate jjamppong (medium, spice level 2) arrived first!!

Medium-size stone-plate jjamppong served on a hot stone plate

The jjamppong sizzling away on the stone plate 🔥 It's extremely hot, so please never touch it with your hands!!!

Stone plate of jjamppong sizzling and bubbling

There's a trick to eating the stone-plate jjamppong and jajangmyeon well, so take note 🔥 While the stone plate is still hot, mix the bean sprouts and noodles together first!!

Jjamppong with bean sprouts and noodles mixed together

It's loaded with a generous variety of seafood inside — plump shrimp, squid, clams, and more!!!

Jjamppong loaded with shrimp, squid, and other seafood

The combo of crunchy bean sprouts and smoky, fire-kissed jjamppong is out of this world .. !! 🔥🤤 As I said, the seafood is generous too so it's fun to eat all the way through haha. You might think the only difference from regular jjamppong is the bowl it comes in, but the noodles are so much chewier and springier, and the broth soaks into the noodles way more than regular jjamppong .. 👍🏻 And then add that smoky wok-fire flavor on top? Enough said haha. I like spicy food myself, but I'd still recommend spice level 2 at Songjeong Dol Jjamppong 👍🏻 — that way you get to enjoy both the smoky flavor and the heat together, it seems.

And once you've mostly finished the jjamppong, eating the scorched rice at the bottom of the stone plate is the perfect finish .. 💗 The broth soaks right into the crispy rice — absolutely incredible! (+ they give you a free bowl of rice too, so grab one if you want more!)

The mini glutinous-rice tangsuyuk in the set

Next up is the mini sweet and sour pork included in the set!

Mini sweet and sour pork included in the set

The moment it arrived I had to ask — is this really the 'mini' size..? The portion was so generous. And the look was a little different from the usual tangsuyuk!! The outside was coated in breadcrumbs like tonkatsu? I dipped it straight into the sauce and tried it.

Breaded sweet and sour pork dipped in sauce

Instead of the usual chewy tangsuyuk, the outside was fried crispy like a pork cutlet, while the inside stayed chewy thanks to the sticky rice batter .. 💗 I was won over by this totally new tangsuyuk texture!! And the meat inside was nice and thick too — total win ! 👍🏻 It pairs really well with the spicy stone-plate jjamppong haha.

Mala fried dumplings: the strongest mala flavor yet

Last up, the mala fried dumplings!

A plate of crispy fried mala dumplings

The dumplings came out perfectly crispy and fried haha. My boyfriend and I are huge fans of the mala mandu at Yong Yong Sunsaeng — chef, please drop the dumpling recipe in the comments ㅜㅠ haha 🙏🏻

Mala dumpling filling packed with wood ear mushrooms and glass noodles

Packed inside with wood ear mushrooms, meat, glass noodles, and more, and above all — the mala flavor is the strongest I've had in any mala mandu so far 💗 If you like mala, you have to order these 🥺 And, a bit late to mention, but

A drink enjoyed alongside the meal

it was so good we ended up having a daytime drink .. haha lol Another great meal today!

Is Songjeong Dol Jjamppong worth it? Final verdict

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is a Songjeong, Busan hotspot I actually stop by often whenever I'm in the area haha. The smoky, spicy stone-plate jjamppong is great, and the tangsuyuk and dumplings are all delicious too .. 💗 Highly recommend this place if you're looking for something a little different to eat in Songjeong!! It gets crowded, so a Catch Table reservation is a must — make sure to check!! Since I already stop by often, my odds of returning again are 492010% !!
