Haetan, the squid specialist restaurant in Byeongjeom!! I'd been to another branch of Haetan before and remembered it being delicious, so when I heard they'd opened one in Byeongjeom, Hwaseong, I had to check it out. Haetan is the kind of place you can trust because it's been featured on TV shows like Live Today (생방송투데이) and The Delicious Guys (맛있는녀석들). It's located near Byeongjeom's central shopping street so it's easy to get to, and if you drive, you can use Jinan Public Parking Lot for 90 minutes free.
Jinan Public Parking Lot to Haetan: a 2-minute walk, 90 minutes free
The parking lot is spacious with plenty of spots, so there's no need to worry about finding a place, and it's just a 2-minute walk from there to Haetan!! You just cross the street and you're basically there.
Unlimited rice self-serve bar and a spacious dining hall
Once inside, the restaurant is big and the floor-to-ceiling windows keep it from feeling cramped — plenty of room even for group visits. The self-serve bar, where you can help yourself, has rice, sungnyung (scorched rice water), bean sprout cold soup, and various side dishes,
and there was even ice cream set out for dessert. Best of all, the rice is unlimited and the side dishes are varied, so I left completely full.
Haetan's menu and what we ordered
The menu ranges from main dishes (hot-plate squid, hot-plate stir-fried pork, fire-spicy cheese hot-plate squid, hot-plate squid and pork stir-fry, flower pork belly bossam + spicy squid salad) to single-serving dishes and drinking-snack menus (minari clam soup, spicy squid salad, squid hangover soup, whelk bibim kalguksu (mixed noodle soup), boiled squid), plus side dishes and add-ons. Among these, the signature items we ordered were

There were so many options on the menu that we spent a long time deciding what to order~~
How spicy is the hot-plate squid at Haetan?
They set you up with small portions of the side dishes while you wait, and then the hot-plate squid arrives.
The squid stir-fry sizzles appetizingly on the hot plate!!! It's sweet and spicy. The regular spice level is about as spicy as Shin Ramyun, and you can choose mild or spicy when you order. If it gets too spicy while you're eating, make sure to grab the corn salad!!
Hot-plate squid with one-person pork belly suyuk
From my experience, the hot-plate squid and one-person bossam combo pairs really well together, so I'd recommend it. Eating the squid together with the bossam gives you a great mix of textures, and the flavor is doubly good!!
Fried squid served with pickled onions
The fried squid has a crispy coating around thick chunks of squid — a great side dish!!! It's even better eaten together with the pickled onions. The hot-plate squid sauce is so good you can mix it into rice, and dipping the fried squid into that sauce is delicious too. It's also great mixed into fried rice or with kalguksu noodles added in~
Haetan's lunch special runs 11:00–14:00
If you visit between 11:00 and 14:00, you get discounted lunch-special prices, so it seems like a good idea to go during lunch hours. I went later and missed the discount, but I'm planning to visit at lunchtime next time haha.
Dessert ice cream and the review event
After a satisfying meal, the ice cream dessert was a nice finish. There's a Naver receipt review event where if you write a review with a photo attached, you can get fried squid mandu (5 pieces) or a drink (1 can), so definitely take part in that too~~ Squid is a low-fat, high-protein, low-calorie ingredient that anyone can enjoy without guilt, which makes Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom a great spot for family gatherings or work dinners.
