This time I wanted to fill up on something hearty after work, so I went looking for a real neighborhood favorite. I'd heard there was quality charcoal-grilled raw pork rib near Suraksan Station, so I headed to Mungchi, a Suraksan-area restaurant.

Where is Mungchi, and what are its hours?
Mungchi is located in an alley near Suraksan Station, at 1657 Dongil-ro, Nowon-gu, Seoul. It's open daily from 15:00 to 24:00, with regular closures every Tuesday.

At the entrance to the alley near Suraksan Station, the white sign reading 'Mungchi Charcoal Grilled Raw Pork Rib' caught my eye. Arriving around sunset, I felt that cozy vibe unique to a neighborhood alley commercial strip.

Getting closer, the sliding door entrance had such a strong retro atmosphere that it gave off serious 'hidden local gem' energy — my expectations were sky-high from the first impression.

Inside Mungchi: seating and atmosphere
Inside Mungchi, round stainless steel tables perfect for grilling meat are cozily arranged. It's a small space, but that actually makes it perfect for a quiet chat over a Nowon Korean BBQ date.

Every corner of the restaurant was kept clean without any greasy residue, which put my mind at ease on the hygiene front.

Mungchi menu and prices
After sitting down, I carefully looked over the 'Mungchi Menu' posted on the wall. The main meat menu is simple and reasonably priced: raw pork rib (200g, ₩17,000) and Mungchi pork neck (200g, ₩17,000).

For meal items, there was a solid lineup of dishes that pair perfectly with meat — cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), rolled egg, Paldo bibim noodles — and a notice posted on the wall caught my attention. It showed the owner's genuine care and pride in each ingredient, including mineral-rich saltwort salt.

What side dishes come with the meal?
As soon as I ordered, neat side dishes appeared right away. On the round table, they generously set out ssamjang (dipping paste), garlic, fresh wasabi, and saltwort salt, plus perilla leaves and citron scallion slaw to add extra flavor.

Grilling the charcoal pork galbi and pork neck
Then today's star arrived. The thick raw pork rib and pork neck, with their vivid red color and tight marbling, looked absolutely stunning.

They also generously provided big king oyster mushrooms and green onions to grill alongside, plus a spicy seasoned bean sprout salad. (This must be what they mean by the owner's generosity.)
They placed the grill plate over the seriously hot Korean charcoal and carefully arranged the thick cuts of meat, mushrooms, and green onions on top.

They even placed the bean sprout salad on a stainless plate on one side of the grill so it wouldn't burn. The charcoal heat was so strong that it made the outside crispy while sealing all the juices in inside.

Saltwort salt, citron scallion slaw and fresh wasabi
I dipped bite-sized pieces of meat and mushroom into the saltwort salt to enjoy their natural flavor,

and following the instructions posted on the wall, topping it with citron scallion slaw and wasabi made the flavors burst — bright and nutty all at once.

Finishing with bibimbap, cheonggukjang and Paldo bibim noodles
I also ordered bibimbap to eat with the meat, and it came out loaded with various seasoned vegetables, sauce, and a fried egg — plus a thoughtful note suggesting adding fermented anchovy sauce if the seasoning wasn't quite right. A perfect touch.

You absolutely can't skip Paldo bibim noodles and comforting cheonggukjang when eating meat, so we didn't. The tangy-sweet bibim noodles topped with a chewy piece of meat was truly a match made in heaven,

and the cheonggukjang, packed generously with ingredients, was great mixed into rice or eaten hot straight from the bowl.
Who should visit Mungchi?
The quality of the meat itself at Mungchi is excellent, but what stood out most was how perfectly the side dishes (citron scallion slaw, fermented anchovy sauce, bibimbap, etc.) were put together to let you enjoy the meat at 200%. With every bite of chewy, charcoal-scented raw rib paired with Mungchi's special sides, my chopsticks just kept going without ever getting tired of it. Thanks to a satisfying dinner at this Suraksan Station restaurant, all my stress from the day melted away.
For anyone near Suraksan Station wanting to enjoy genuinely delicious charcoal-grilled meat, or looking for a successful Nowon Korean BBQ date in a retro, comfortable atmosphere, I highly recommend this place. When you visit, be sure to order both the pork neck and raw rib, and don't skip the meal combo of generous rice served in a big bowl with the comforting cheonggukjang!
