In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju, serving stone-plate jjajang and tangsuyuk. I ordered stone jjajang, half tangsuyuk, and Zero Coke by QR code, then enjoyed the gently seasoned bubbling noodles, juicy pork, scallion kimchi, and ice cream service. Visiting Mayway, a Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan, Gwangju

Mayway parking and interior

⏰ Hours

🚗 Parking information

Mayway does not have its own parking lot, but parking is available near the building and in the alley behind it, so I was able to park in the alley.

Here is the interior! It was arranged mostly with four-person tables, plus around three two-person tables. The whole place felt well organized, clean, and spacious.

QR ordering and the self-service corner

Once you sit down, you can order by QR code. You pay when you leave; they only take the order by QR code. I had heard Mayway had stone-plate jjajang, so I ordered stone jjajang, half tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour fried pork), and Zero Coke.

That sizzling stone-plate jjajang had to be delicious, right?

Chili powder, soy sauce, and vinegar were set out on the table, which was convenient since I did not need to ask for them. When I eat tangsuyuk, I absolutely have to sprinkle chili powder into soy sauce and alternate it with the standard tangsuyuk sauce for that sweet-salty balance.

A little detail that makes it easy to eat comfortably!

There is also a self-service corner near the entrance: onions, macaroni, danmuji (yellow pickled radish), and scallion kimchi. Scallion kimchi with jjajang? Now that is a truly informed pairing.

What even is a good vibe? Isn't this exactly it?

A flame-heated stone plate and sweet potato chip service

When I ordered the stone jjajang, the owner first placed the stone plate on the table and heated it up. Some stone-plate jjajang comes already in its stone bowl, but here they heat it directly over a flame.

Complimentary sweet potato chips

They were sweet and such a nice little treat. They were warm, too, so tasty.

Mayway's dining area while waiting for food

While waiting for the food, I looked around the restaurant and saw that Mayway makes its own noodles? A note on the wall said they handle everything in-house, from kneading and aging the flour dough to making the sauce and base, to maintain a rich flavor. That made me even more curious about the taste.

-ˋˏThey even brought out a thermometer.. ˎˊ- The owner personally checked the stone plate's temperature! Such careful attention so we could eat it nice and hot.

A big pour of jjajang onto the stone plate. It looked seriously delicious.

The look of that stone-plate jjajang!! It even came topped with a fried egg, and there were plenty of ingredients including shrimp, squid, and onion.

There were big pieces of squid in it, too.

You know you need to give stone-plate jjajang a good stir now and then before it sticks to the bottom, right!!! Still, the charm of it is that bubbling jjajang sauce 🥺🤎 Keep stirring, then eat the noodles and ingredients together haha.

Large, juicy half tangsuyuk

Even though it was a half portion of tangsuyuk, there was more than I expected! The plate was piled full, making it easy to pick up piece by piece, and the pieces were quite large.

The meat was not dry at all—seriously crispy outside and tender inside. It was full of juices and had that old-school tangsuyuk feel, so I enjoyed it so much.

Juicy, tender tangsuyuk

The sweet standard tangsuyuk sauce was tasty, too.

I gently sprinkled chili powder into soy sauce to make a dipping sauce, too 🤤 It went so well with the soy sauce.

A quick bite topped with squid—usually stone-plate jjajang can taste salty in spots as it cooks on the hot plate! But Mayway's was nicely balanced and not salty, which I loved. It was not bland, though; it had plenty of savory depth.

They even brought out ice cream to freshen up after the meal. As someone with a separate dessert stomach, this service made me so happy 🫶🏻 It was such a delicious meal.

Stone-plate jjajang and tangsuyuk: final thoughts

Because it was stone-plate jjajang, it felt different from regular jajangmyeon (black bean noodles), which I liked, and it was not salty, so it was easy to enjoy without feeling weighed down. The tangsuyuk was juicy and delicious, too! I had a hearty, satisfying meal with the jjajangmyeon-and-tangsuyuk combination -🤤
