Extra-large garlic bossam revisit in Gwangju: Kkankkanhan Jokbal

Today I want to write about Kkankkanhan Jokbal Main Branch, a Cheomdan pub I visited once before and just couldn't stop thinking about — so I went back! What stole my heart was the Goheung raw garlic bossam. I'm a total garlic lover, so of course I had to go eat it again.

Right in the middle of the Cheomdan food alley — the vibe inside

Kkankkanhan Jokbal Main Branch sits right in the center of the Cheomdan food alley!!

Since it was a Friday evening there were quite a lot of people. Even so, the place is spacious enough that it never felt noisy! haha

Watching KBO on the big screen

The biggest draw of Kkankkanhan Jokbal Main Branch is that you can watch KBO baseball on a huge screen~! The screen sits right in the middle of the store, so it's visible no matter where you sit — love that.

The basic side dishes and refillable doenjang soup

The side dishes come out looking like this. (We ordered the sweet potato makgeolli ourselves... haha, makgeolli lover here.) Every single time I come, that doenjang soup (soybean paste soup) is just so, so good!

Boil it up bubbling hot and it's basically its own drinking snack... In between bites of bossam, a spoonful of that warm broth totally resets your stomach. Ask and they'll refill it for you!

You also get a moist steamed egg as a basic side.

Extra-large Goheung raw garlic bossam — still as good the second time?

Finally, the Goheung raw garlic bossam I'd been waiting and waiting for... The visuals are seriously insane, right?; Since this was a revisit, my expectations were even higher, and I was so impatient to eat it I could barely finish taking photos..;;

One bite in and — yep, it's exactly as good as I remembered. Honestly the best bossam (boiled pork wrap) I've ever had in my life. The clean, moist meat plus the sharp, fragrant raw garlic cuts through any greasiness perfectly — just the best!!!!!!! If you love garlic, I strongly, strongly recommend this.

Eating it again somehow made it taste even better... I'd say I'm about 98237492834% likely to come back... guess I'll just keep coming every time my cooldown resets... haha

How much is the extra-large portion, really?

We eat a lot, so haha, we ordered the extra-large size. The portion was massive — honestly a bit much — but we somehow managed to finish it all. haha

I'm a garlic lover, so I piled the sauce on generously. I'd say adjust the amount of sauce to your own taste.

One piece of bossam... one bite of sweet cabbage kimchi... absolute perfection...♥ If you're looking for a Cheomdan pub, I highly recommend the Goheung raw garlic bossam plus makgeolli combo!

Even the bathroom and waiting area are thoughtfully done

And here's another reason Kkankkanhan Jokbal Main Branch is great... it's not just the food — you can feel the care for customers all over the place. Toilet seat covers, even?... that kind of thoughtfulness... so meticulous!!

Ice cream you can scoop yourself in the waiting area!! We had it for dessert, and the Oreo flavor is genuinely delicious.

There are arcade games too, so waiting won't be boring, right? haha Families visiting with kids can probably pass the waiting time a little more easily too.

Haha, the Jeolla-do dialect signage... I think these little details are part of Kkankkanhan Jokbal's cute charm. haha

Wrapping up the revisit

A great restaurant is satisfying enough when just the food is good, but when the waiting area and even the bathroom are made this comfortable, the whole experience feels even better. 😊 Most of all, I was so happy that the dish I loved so much on my first visit tasted just as amazing this time around!
