Cheomdan Chinese restaurant yusanseul rice and half tangsuyuk: Mayway
In short
Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan is a Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju that carries on the flavors of Daeheung Banjeom, which opened in Gwangju in 1950. On a weekend lunch visit, jjajang (black bean noodles) was 6,900 won, half tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) 18,900 won and yusanseul rice (stir-fried meat and vegetables over rice) 14,900 won, with scallion kimchi from the self-serve bar and strawberry ice cream for dessert. For some reason, every weekend I get a craving for Chinese food, haha. Delivery Chinese food is great and all, but this time I wanted the real thing, so I went in person to Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan. It's a newly opened, clean-looking place, but I found out it actually carries on the flavors of Gwangju Chinese cuisine going back to 1950. 💚
What kind of place is Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan? The Daeheung Banjeom taste since 1950
Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan is a Chinese restaurant reintroducing the cuisine of Daeheung Banjeom, which started in Gwangju in 1950. You can experience flavors carried on for decades in a modern-day store.

Naver Reservation is also available, so booking ahead makes for an even smoother visit.
Where Mayway is and what the dining room feels like: near Lotte Mart Cheomdan
Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan sits right in the heart of Cheomdan, close to Lotte Mart Cheomdan and Mustard Seed Church.

The exterior was clean and tidy, which made a great first impression.

"Alright, I'm going in~ thump thump" 😝😜 Being a newly opened store, everything felt clean and well organized!

The interior was tidy too, with window seats available, which I loved haha. It seemed like a great spot for a weekend family meal or lunch out in Cheomdan.

How to order at Mayway: QR order at the table
You can order easily using QR order. We looked over the menu at the table and ordered right away.
For older visitors who aren't used to QR ordering, the owner kindly brought over a physical menu and took the order personally. That kind of thoughtful service was really nice.

What we ordered at Mayway and what it cost
At Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan we ordered jjajang for ₩6,900, half tangsuyuk for ₩18,900, and yusanseul rice for ₩14,900.
- Jjajang ₩6,900
- Tangsuyuk (half) ₩18,900
- Yusanseul rice ₩14,900
We decided to try a bit of everything — jjajang, freshly fried tangsuyuk, and this time, a special order of yusanseul rice. The tangsuyuk especially was something I'd really wanted to try, so I was excited from the moment we ordered.
The free fried sweet potato that comes first

These are my favorite kind of fritter, so I was happy the moment I saw them.

So good, so good!! Haha, so delicious. Eaten warm, they were sweet and crispy, which got my appetite going even before the meal started.
Side dishes and rice from Mayway's self-serve bar 🌿

Mayway has a self-serve bar, so you can help yourself to as many side dishes and as much rice as you like.

The first thing that caught my eye was the scallion kimchi!

It looked delicious, so I piled on a generous amount, and sure enough — my eyes didn't deceive me, haha.

The scallion kimchi was so good I kept eating it alongside the jjajang.
Half tangsuyuk, 18,900 won: light and not greasy
Today's BEST menu item! The most memorable dish was, without a doubt, Mayway's tangsuyuk.

It came freshly fried, so we got to eat it piping hot right away.

None of that usual greasiness — just light and crispy, and I kept reaching for more. This place is truly a tangsuyuk spot worth knowing! 🧡
Yusanseul rice, 14,900 won: the chili oil aroma makes it
For something a little different, I picked the yusanseul rice! A light drizzle of chili oil gave off a subtle aroma that made it a real treat.

The fragrant chili oil paired well with the soft yusanseul (mixed meat and vegetables), and eating it with rice was delicious. I'd recommend it whenever you're craving something a bit special from a Chinese menu, haha.
Jjajang at 6,900 won with scallion kimchi
And of course, if you're at a Chinese restaurant, you have to get jjajang!

Honestly... I'm more of a jjapaghetti (instant jjajang noodles) person, haha. But that day changed my mind a little.

Eating the light, delicious tangsuyuk together with the jjajang, I thought, 'I guess I'm a jjajang person now!'

It paired especially well with the scallion kimchi I'd brought over earlier. Jjajang plus scallion kimchi — highly recommend that combo!
Dessert at Mayway: strawberry ice cream 🍓🍦
We also had strawberry ice cream for dessert.

There were a few blueberries on top, and I ate those first thing 🫐. After finishing off the sweet ice cream, it felt like a proper, satisfying weekend lunch!
