Tonight I went for a hearty, restorative dinner at Yuil Jangeo, an eel restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju 😊 Yuil Jangeo is a freshwater eel specialist run directly by its own fish farm. With a huge parking lot and private rooms, it's great for family outings or gatherings. Here's my review of charcoal-grilled eel, golden brown and delicious 🐟🔥

Where is Yuil Jangeo, and is there parking in the evening?

Yuil Jangeo sits on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan, Gwangju, with generous parking in front of and beside the building. I visited in the evening, and the big Yuil Jangeo sign was visible from far away, so it was easy to find. The building itself is fairly large and the exterior looked clean, giving a spacious, pleasant first impression 😊

The best part was the ample parking in front of and beside the restaurant! Even though there were quite a few customers during my evening visit, the lot was wide enough that I could park comfortably 🚗

Right inside the entrance is a waiting area. On weekends or during evening peak hours you might have to wait a bit, but there are plenty of chairs by the entrance for comfortable waiting 😊 The counter is right there too, so getting seated was easy, and the whole entrance felt neat and well organized.

How to pick your eel at Yuil Jangeo: 4,833 won per 100g

At Yuil Jangeo you pick out the eel you want to eat directly from a refrigerated display case and pay for it. On my visit, live eel for two servings (600g trimmed) was ₩29,000, or ₩4,833 per 100g. After being greeted at the entrance, the first step was choosing the eel myself — staff guide you to the display case where the eel is laid out, and once you choose what you want, you pay right there 😊

Looking closely into the case, the trimmed eel was neatly packed by size, with the weight and price labeled, which made it easy to compare and choose!

Above the display case, the eel prices and how to order were laid out clearly. On my visit, live eel for two servings (600g trimmed) was ₩29,000, or ₩4,833 per 100g, and they use domestic japonica-species eel. Delivery orders are also available, with free shipping on orders over ₩100,000 — seems like a solid gift option too 🎁

The hall and the day-of-the-week rooms: we took the Saturday room

The hall at Yuil Jangeo is spacious and clean, comfortable for a meal, and there are separate private rooms further in. Ours was the Saturday room, out of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday rooms ^^

Side dishes and the self-serve bar at Yuil Jangeo

The basic side dishes were quite varied too 😊 First out were sliced onions, perilla leaves, kimchi, seasoned chives, salad and sauces — all great with eel.

If you run low on any side dish, you can grab more as needed from the self-serve bar. It had everything from wrap greens to garlic, onions, kimchi, and various sauces, so it was easy to customize to your taste.

Grilling the pre-cooked eel over charcoal

Once seated, they bring the charcoal first, then lay the pre-cooked eel onto the grill 🔥

Since it came already partially trimmed and pre-cooked, the wait was shorter than grilling from raw — a nice touch.

The eel was nice and thick, so it looked great the moment it hit the grill 😊

Want to see the eel turning a beautiful golden brown? 🐟🔥

When first placed on the grill it still looked pale and soft, so it needed a bit more grilling.

As it cooked a bit more, the surface started to turn golden brown. This is when it started looking really appetizing haha

The eel got plumper and plumper, the outside turning golden while the inside looked moist — my anticipation kept growing.

It clearly looked perfectly cooked 🤍 The outside looked crisp, the inside soft — I wanted to eat it right away.

Finally, the eel was ready, golden brown and perfect to eat 🐟🔥

I put eel on a perilla leaf, added seasoned chives, garlic, chili, and ssamjang (thick dipping paste), and took a bite! The savory eel combined with the fragrant wrap greens made it even more delicious 😋

Finishing the meal with eel soup

You can't come for eel and skip the eel soup 😋 Served bubbling hot, the eel soup was the perfect way to finish after the grilled eel. Eating it with rice made for a hearty ending to the meal 🍚🔥

Yuil Jangeo verdict, restrooms and the dessert corner

Overall, the eel was thick and savory, which was satisfying, and having it grilled for us made for an easy meal 😊 With a large parking lot, a hall, and private rooms, Yuil Jangeo — this Gwangju eel restaurant — seemed like a great choice for family outings or a meal with your parents. Between the grilled eel and the eel soup, I finished the evening full and happy 🐟🔥

One last note on amenities: coming in from the parking lot entrance, the restrooms are right there. The dessert area, where you can have coffee or tea after your meal, is near the opposite entrance ☕
