Suwan District pork gukbap with nurungji rice: Sinjuokmi, Gwangju

In short

Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch is a Blue Ribbon sundae-guk (blood sausage soup) and pork gukbap (pork rice soup) restaurant in Jangdeok-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. We ordered the sticky rice nurungji (scorched rice) pork gukbap, the sanghwang mushroom nurungji pork gukbap and a two-person suyuk (boiled pork) set, then added two extra bowls of rice — a portion-size mistake, since the nurungji kept swelling in the broth. The broth at Sinjuokmi is rich and the pork has no gamey smell, so it works for a company dinner or a meal out with parents.

Ordering by kiosk and what's on the self-serve side dish bar

At Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch, you order through the kiosk on each table. The tables come with pepper, dadaegi (spicy chili paste), jeotgal (salted seafood), and perilla powder to go with the gukbap. Once we sat down, they brought out the basic side dishes.

For anything else you need, there's a self-serve bar with chives, onions, kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), julienned radish, ssamjang, green onions, chojang (vinegar chili sauce), peppers, and really a wide variety of side dishes

Sinjuokmi's menu and what we ordered

Being a gukbap restaurant, there's a wide range of menu items. The signature dishes are the Sinjuokmi Boyang Sundae-guk, the special spicy fern (gosari) myeongin sundae-guk, spicy fern assorted offal gukbap, and sticky rice nurungji pork gukbap, plus they sell assorted sundae (blood sausage) and suyuk (boiled pork). The suyuk in particular is boiled four times a day, apparently.

So what did we order? Thinking it would be good value, we went with the suyuk set.

  • Sticky rice nurungji pork gukbap suyuk set ₩13,800
  • Sanghwang sticky rice nurungji pork gukbap suyuk set ₩14,000

They said writing a Naver receipt review gets you a ppeonggwaja (puffed rice snack) or a drink, so be sure to join in!

The two-person suyuk (boiled pork) set

First, the two-person suyuk set arrived I was happy there was so much lean meat,, The suyuk was tender, with absolutely no gamey smell from the meat

And then out came the sticky rice nurungji pork gukbap

And the sanghwang sticky rice nurungji pork gukbap! Diligently loading in chives, green onion, pepper Oh!! For reference, the self-serve bar also has noodles — eat those first while the broth's hot, then have the nurungji and meat later, it tastes even better that way

Be sure to mix perilla powder into the chojang too!! That's how the ones who really know how to eat, eat it,,,

Should you add rice to sticky rice nurungji pork gukbap?

Only big eaters should add a bowl of rice to Sinjuokmi's sticky rice nurungji pork gukbap. At first...thinking there was only a little nurungji in there, we ordered two extra bowls of rice separately, and that turned out to be a portion-size mistake ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ The nurungji kept swelling as we ate, until it basically became a whole bowl of rice on its own. We barely managed half a bowl of rice with the suyuk and ended up leaving nurungji behind. Only order extra rice if you're a big eater.

Rich broth loaded with pork

The pork gukbap broth was really rich and the amount of pork in it was more than I expected And of course..it was tender Move aside, Busan pork gukbap~ This broth could go with a hangover-curing drink too..

Would I go back to Sinjuokmi in Suwan District?

Overall the restaurant was spacious, clean, and tasty enough that I want to come back. It would also work well for a company dinner or a group gathering. (The taste and atmosphere seem like something parents would enjoy too.)

There are so many types of gukbap that I want to try them one by one The broth all seems like it would be delicious~~ There wasn't really a decent pork gukbap place in Suwan District, so I used to crave it occasionally, and now I'm glad I can just come to Sinjuokmi haha Sundae-guk is actually the main dish here, and apparently the sundae here is delicious with no gamey smell at all Planning to come back again next time!!!
