Suwon pork kimchi grill with mayo perilla wraps, ₩500 egg: Sarangjip

In short

Sarangjip is a Korean pork kimchi grill restaurant on Ajuro39beon-gil near Ajou University in Suwon, Gyeonggi. Two diners ordered the medium pork kimchi grill (₩26,500) and the lunch special fried egg for ₩500, then followed the method posted in the restaurant: grilled pork and kimchi on a perilla leaf with mayonnaise, ssamjang, and garlic. For two people the medium is a lot of food, so Sarangjip's small size is the better pick.

Table setting with pork kimchi grill at Sarangjip near Ajou University

Today I wanted pork and kimchi together for lunch, so I went to Sarangjip near Ajou University.

Medium-size pork kimchi grill in a pan

On this visit I ordered the medium size of the signature pork kimchi grill, plus a fried egg from the lunch special. The dish comes as a whole pan piled with kimchi and pork, so it pairs really well with rice. The two of us ordered the medium size and honestly it was a lot — I'd recommend going with the small if there are just two of you!

The basic side dishes included perilla leaves, corn kernels, and other things that go well with meat. I personally love mu-ssam (pickled radish wrap slices), so I was really happy to see it among the side dishes!

Pork kimchi grill served in a wide pan

When our medium pork kimchi grill arrived, the meat and kimchi were both piled together in a wide pan.

In the photo you can see plenty of pork tucked between well-fermented kimchi, with onions stir-fried in as well. Instead of grilling the meat separately, the pork and kimchi are cooked together in one pan from the start, so it was easy to just dig in.

How to eat it: perilla leaf, mayonnaise, ssamjang, and garlic

On one side of Sarangjip there's a sign showing how to eat the kimchi grill for the best flavor!!

Following the method posted in the store — piling the kimchi grill, mayonnaise, ssamjang, and garlic on a perilla leaf — it was genuinely delicious! The mayonnaise mellowed out the spicy pork kimchi grill, making it even better.

Rather than eating the meat on its own, it went better paired with rice. Also, since the pan sits on a tabletop burner, it stayed warm all the way through the meal, which was another plus.

The ₩500 lunch special fried egg at Sarangjip

Two fried eggs from the 500-won lunch special

We added a fried egg for 500 won from Sarangjip's lunch special. Two fried eggs came out on a large stainless plate, with the yolks still intact.

Ordering a fried egg alongside a seasoned dish like the pork kimchi grill gave us one more combination to enjoy with rice. It was also nice to have some egg in between bites of pork and kimchi. In particular, being able to add it for just 500 won at lunch is worth keeping in mind when ordering.

Would we order pork kimchi grill with a fried egg again?

This time at Sarangjip near Ajou University, I had the medium pork kimchi grill with the lunch special fried egg. Rather than ordering a bunch of different dishes, the simple combination of pork and kimchi cooked together in one pan stuck with me. If I come back for lunch, I'd like to order the pork kimchi grill with a fried egg added again.

If you're near Ajou University looking for pork kimchi grill that goes well with rice, it might be worth comparing the sizes and menu at Sarangjip.
