Jinju naengmyeon restaurant with galbitang at early lunch: Song Giwon
In short
Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch is a long-standing Jinju naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant in Jinju, Gyeongnam that presses its own noodles from Jeju buckwheat. On an early lunch visit the order was the Sunjo 1800 water naengmyeon, mixed naengmyeon (seokkeum naengmyeon), yukjeon (pan-fried beef) and galbitang (short rib soup), with a cup of warm broth alongside. The signature mixed naengmyeon was good, but the clear favorite at Song Giwon was the straightforward water naengmyeon.

What we ate at Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch
Naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) is one of the first foods that comes to mind when you think of Jinju. Today I visited Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch, a place many people think of when they want naengmyeon in Jinju.
This time I went to the main branch and properly worked through water naengmyeon, mixed naengmyeon, galbitang, and yukjeon. Spoiler: my personal favorite was, as expected, the water naengmyeon.

How long is the wait at Song Giwon?
Even for early lunch, a line forms quickly at Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch. We came a bit early to avoid the wait, and luckily we could walk right in when we arrived — but by the time we were eating, a line had already formed outside. Lunchtime really is a different story at a famous Jinju naengmyeon spot.

That said, turnover is quite fast, so having a wait doesn't necessarily mean a long one. Still, at peak times the wait can stretch out, so I'd recommend visiting a little early if you can. Naengmyeon is the kind of food you suddenly crave on a hot day, so if you time it exactly at lunch, everyone tends to show up at once.

House-pressed Jeju buckwheat noodles
Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon is also known for milling its own noodles. They use high-quality Jeju buckwheat, and the noodles are kneaded, aged, and made fresh in-house.

For Jinju naengmyeon, the broth matters, but I personally think the noodle texture matters just as much. I like noodles that aren't too chewy or prone to snapping, but have just the right springiness and go down smoothly. Here, the noodles and broth felt like they came together really well.

What does the signature mixed naengmyeon taste like?
The signature dish at Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon has to be the mixed naengmyeon (seokkeum naengmyeon), so we ordered one. It sits somewhere between water naengmyeon and bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed noodles), letting you enjoy both the savoriness of the broth and the flavor of the seasoning — great for anyone who usually likes bibim naengmyeon.
It was definitely a good way to experience Song Giwon's own take on naengmyeon, true to its status as the signature dish. But from here it's purely personal preference — for me, the water naengmyeon was still the tastiest.

Top pick: Sunjo 1800 water naengmyeon
What I ordered was the Sunjo 1800 water naengmyeon. Honestly, whenever I visit a naengmyeon restaurant for the first time, I try to order water naengmyeon first if I can. It's the basic version, after all — without strong seasoning or other ingredients overpowering things, you can really taste the broth and the noodles themselves.
One bite in, I got a clean but subtly deep savoriness. Cold, refreshing broth with buckwheat noodles — on a hot day, nothing beats naengmyeon.

On top were toppings like yukjeon, egg, mu-kimchi (radish kimchi), and pear, which made it fun to eat one by one alongside the noodles. I enjoyed the mixed naengmyeon too, but if I went back, I think I'd choose the water naengmyeon again. If you're trying Jinju naengmyeon for the first time, I'd recommend starting with the basic water naengmyeon.

A cup of warm broth alongside the naengmyeon
There's one more thing you shouldn't skip while eating naengmyeon: warm broth. After eating cold noodles, a sip of warm broth feels different in the best way. You get the deep flavor of the broth itself, and it resets your palate between bites of cold noodles — a great pairing.
When you eat naengmyeon and it's all cold, cold, cold, at some point you crave something warm — and that's exactly when the warm broth comes in.

Yukjeon, the best match for Jinju naengmyeon
We also ordered yukjeon (pan-fried beef) on the side. Golden-fried yukjeon came out more tender and tasty than I expected.

The yukjeon on top of the naengmyeon is nice, but ordering it separately and eating it properly was even better.

A bite of soft yukjeon followed by a mouthful of cold water naengmyeon is a really good combo. If just naengmyeon feels like it's not quite enough, or if you're visiting with a group, I'd recommend ordering yukjeon alongside it.

Galbitang for a heartier lunch
Since naengmyeon alone felt like it might not be enough, we also ordered galbitang (short rib soup) that day. It's a totally different kind of dish from naengmyeon, so it was good for sharing with a group.

After the cool naengmyeon, having warm galbitang broth too made for a pretty filling meal. It's also nice for groups where someone might not be a fan of naengmyeon — you can just order a meal dish like galbitang for them instead.

One of the most famous naengmyeon restaurants in Jinju
Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon carries on the tradition of Jinju naengmyeon, and is said to have studied and refined it over a long time. They mill their own noodles from Jeju buckwheat and make the broth using Korean beef bones and seafood, putting real care into every step of making a bowl of naengmyeon.
Maybe that's why it never fails to come up when you search for the best Jinju naengmyeon restaurants. I've had Jinju naengmyeon many times, but this place still felt like somewhere worth visiting at least once. Eating at the main branch in particular felt like the right way to properly experience Jinju naengmyeon.

Why an early lunch visit is worth it
One thing, though — being a famous place, you should be somewhat prepared for a wait. Going for early lunch like we did means getting in relatively easily, but even a little later, customers pile up fast. Turnover is decent, so a wait tends to clear faster than you'd expect, but on really busy days you could still be waiting a while. I'd recommend visiting a bit earlier.

Looking for a Jinju naengmyeon restaurant?
This time I tried a good range — water naengmyeon, mixed naengmyeon, galbitang, and yukjeon. The signature mixed naengmyeon was good, but my personal favorite was still the Sunjo 1800 water naengmyeon. When it comes to naengmyeon, the basics matter most.

Clean, cool broth, house-made buckwheat noodles, and toppings like yukjeon and pear together let me really feel the appeal of Jinju naengmyeon. And the yukjeon was tender and paired well with the noodles, so I'd recommend ordering it alongside — that's a solid combo!

If you're visiting Jinju or want a proper bowl of naengmyeon there, give Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch a try as a top Jinju naengmyeon restaurant. If it's your first visit especially, I'd most recommend the water naengmyeon. Next time I'll have to try something else, but I have a feeling I'll end up ordering water naengmyeon again anyway. When it comes to naengmyeon, water naengmyeon really is the way. Bye for now.
