Rainy weekday café visit for river-gazing at Waltz and Dr. Mahn

Even as a kid I never really liked rainy days, and I still don't, but lately I've come to love watching rainy scenery or listening to the sound of rain from inside a car. I'd been wanting to visit a certain café in Namyangju, and since I was in the area I finally made it over. With a river flowing right in front and the sound of rain on top of that, I figured it could only be an even better place.

First impressions from the parking lot

Looking at the building from the parking lot, I got this grand feeling, like stumbling on an old house or building while traveling in Europe. The vines(?) covering the exterior seemed to add to that atmosphere even more.

If it hadn't been raining, I probably could have enjoyed the outdoor seating too, but I think the rainy-day feeling suited it even better.

A museum runs alongside the café

There's also a museum operating alongside the café. Unfortunately it wasn't open the day I visited so I couldn't look around, but it seems like a nice idea to combine the café with a museum visit.

The walking path in front of the café

A walking path connects right in front of the café, which looked great for a light stroll. Maybe because of the rain, it felt even more atmospheric — the kind of weather that pairs perfectly with a warm cup of coffee.

I visited on a weekday, but apparently on weekends there's even a wait to get in. I think it's not just the flavor but this whole atmosphere that draws people in.

What's the mood like inside?

Maybe it's the antique furniture throughout, but the moment I stepped in, with the quiet music playing, I felt like I'd walked into an old-fashioned tea house — or traveled back in time.

With the furniture layout, the tables, and the soft yellow lighting, this feels like a winning choice whenever you need a quiet spot or want a particular mood.

It has a different vibe from most cafés you see these days — instead of that brand-new feeling, the old furniture and props blend together naturally, and it genuinely felt like time moved a little slower in here.

Honestly, there are so many pretty cafés these days that I initially figured 'this is probably just another café with a nice view.' But once I sat down, it was better than expected — ordering a coffee and just zoning out while watching the Bukhan River is exactly what Waltz and Dr. Mahn is good for.

On Friday evenings they apparently hold concerts that fit the mood perfectly too. You can enjoy it simply as a café, but they also run separate lunch and dinner courses, which makes it a great date spot near Seoul for couples looking for a place with real atmosphere.

The menu

I didn't manage to get a photo of the menu, sorry. There was a course menu with a wine list, plus a choice of coffee or tea. I don't know much about coffee, but I wanted to try the best one on offer, so I ordered the Jamaica Blue Mountain along with the café's signature Honor & Chevalier.

Jamaica Blue Mountain, around ₩20,000 a cup

Honestly, when a coffee costs about ₩20,000 a cup, I couldn't help but wonder what it would taste like. I don't know much about coffee, but the aroma and feel on that first sip were definitely different from what I'm used to. If I knew more and liked coffee more, it might have meant even more, but I figure this is how you learn — by experiencing it.

They say it's one of the world's three great coffees, so I made extra effort to really savor it, haha.

Signature Honor & Chevalier

This is the signature menu item — Dutch coffee or cold milk, chocolate ice cream, cheesecake, seasonal fruit, and macarons, all together. I wondered how it would all fit into one cup, but when it arrived, the sheer volume was almost grand. Beyond the taste, you get fruit, ice cream, and coffee all in one — I don't think there's a better menu item for that.

I took a photo with the cup they served it alongside — both the table and the cup matched the atmosphere perfectly.

They brought this out along with the coffee, and I was too busy taking photos to ask what it was, but it tasted sweet, like sugar. I figured it was meant to be added a little at a time if the coffee is too bitter.

At Waltz and Dr. Mahn, you'll spot all kinds of tea cups that suit the upscale mood — the sort you'd see in a fine hotel dining room, and it made me realize that presentation really does matter too.

If you're looking for a date spot near Seoul, I'd recommend enjoying both the atmosphere and the coffee at Waltz and Dr. Mahn on the Bukhan River in Namyangju — visiting on a rainy day let me feel a completely different side of the place!!
