Not long ago I had a really unfortunate accident — my laptop screen cracked, and it hurt my heart a little. I rushed to the LG service center in Ingye-dong to get it repaired. Waiting through the whole process left me so hungry that I desperately wanted something hot, filling, and stomach-settling.

So I headed without a second thought to 'Dalbonga Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk,' a well-known Ingye-dong restaurant near the service center.

When I arrived, a clean, big sign and entrance banner caught my eye. Phrases like 'A taste that makes you sweat with every spoonful!' and 'The broth gets tastier and spicier the more you eat' made my mouth water before I'd even taken a bite.

Being open 24 hours with a comfortable atmosphere for solo dining, I thought it was perfect for anyone looking for a place to eat alone in Ingye-dong.

Free 2-hour parking behind the building also makes it easy for anyone driving in to grab a comfortable meal.

Inside the restaurant: the menu board and how to pick a spice level

At Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch, you order via a tabletop kiosk and can choose from four spice levels: mild, medium, spicy, and extra spicy. Side dishes and water are self-serve.

Inside, tidy, clean tables were spaced out generously. There were people enjoying a solo meal as well as groups dining together.

Ordering through the tabletop kiosk was easy, and an intuitive menu board was posted on the wall.

Besides the signature ppyeo haejangguk (pork bone soup) and ugeoji ppyeo haejangguk (napa cabbage pork bone soup), the menu also boasts seonji haejangguk (blood sausage soup) and ppyeo jeongol (pork bone hot pot). Spice levels are broken into mild, medium, spicy, and extra spicy so you can pick to your taste.

After some deliberation, here's what we ordered.

For a very reasonable ₩21,000 total, we ordered a solid meal for two. Extra side dishes and water are also free to grab from the self-serve bar.

What does the gopchang seonji haejangguk (medium) taste like?

The gopchang seonji haejangguk (mild, ₩11,000) came packed with seonji (blood sausage) and gopchang (beef tripe), plus a generous layer of bean sprouts, ugeoji (napa cabbage), and enoki mushrooms. The basic side dishes were kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and pickled onions.

After ordering, the basic side dishes arrived: crunchy, well-fermented kkakdugi and tangy-sweet pickled onions that cut the richness. At a soup restaurant, the kimchi makes up more than half the experience — and this place's kkakdugi had such great umami that I refilled it several times.

Then the piping hot soup was set down.

First, the gopchang seonji haejangguk was loaded with fresh blood sausage and savory tripe.

Bean sprouts, napa cabbage, and enoki mushrooms gave the broth a refreshing yet deep flavor. Even at the mild level, the broth had a pleasant smoky note and a good reddish spiciness that really settled the stomach.

The chewy tripe had no unpleasant smell, and the combination with the springy blood sausage was excellent — every bit the top-tier Ingye-dong restaurant it's known to be.

Ppyeo udon haejangguk: pork bone soup with udon noodles

The ppyeo udon haejangguk (mild) is ₩10,000, and comes with udon noodles standard in the pork bone broth, plus a bowl of rice. The meat on the bone came right off with just a touch of the chopsticks, and we dipped it in wasabi soy sauce.

Next up was the ppyeo udon haejangguk I'd been curious about! It's a unique but satisfying dish with springy udon noodles built right into the soup.

The rich, spicy pork bone broth blended smoothly with the plump udon noodles — a real treat.

The meat on the bone was so plentiful and tender that it fell right off with just a touch of chopsticks. Dipping the meat in wasabi soy sauce and slurping down the udon noodles doubled the satisfaction.

With a bowl of rice included too, mixing rice into the broth made the meal absolutely complete.

The free ice cream after your meal

Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch gives every diner a free dessert ice cream. A sign reading 'Free ice cream!' was posted by the entrance, and we picked Dwaejibar (a pork-shaped chocolate-coated ice cream bar).

Wiping the happy sweat off our foreheads as we finished eating and headed to leave, we spotted the welcome 'Free ice cream!' sign by the entrance. They give every diner one free dessert ice cream each!

After a spicy, fiery bowl of haejangguk, cooling down with an ice cream washed away the heat and brought pure happiness.

We each picked a savory-sweet Dwaejibar and enjoyed dessert to the fullest. Thanks to the owner's thoughtful touch, the whole meal ended on a very satisfying note.

A day that started with the heartbreak of a cracked laptop screen ended with all that stress washed away by a hearty, spicy bowl of haejangguk.
