Suwon Chicken Street oak-fired chicken with tteok: Haenggung Jangjak
In short
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak firewood-roasted whole chicken restaurant on Suwon's Chicken Street, right beside Hwaseong Haenggung palace. The corn cheese gratin sauce roast chicken costs 27,000 won, and adding tteoksari (rice cake) for 3,000 won is worth it; despite the long roast the meat stayed moist, and the rice under the chicken turned into thick nurungji (crisp scorched rice). At Haenggung Jangjak the rice cake crisped up on the outside, making it a must-add.

Here for another food exploration!
I found a must-visit spot on Suwon's tongdak (whole roast chicken) street! Not the fried kind — this is chicken roasted over firewood~ These days it's gotten rare to spot the rotisserie chicken trucks around, so I'd often crave it but couldn't get it. So I was thrilled to find a proper restaurant serving it~! Let's get into the review :)
Where is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, and its hours and parking

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is located right next to Hwaseong Haenggung palace, beside the public roadside parking lot there.
Open daily from 5 PM to 12 AM, last order at 11 PM. No parking on-site, so I'd recommend using the nearby Hwaseong Haenggung public roadside lot! (No parking voucher provided though.)

This must-visit spot on Suwon's roast chicken street runs across 1st and 2nd floors, and there's even outdoor seating. Evenings have been getting cool lately, right~ perfect for enjoying that outdoor seating ^^

And it's not fried chicken but roasted — slowly cooked over oak firewood the whole time~! You know that spinning rotisserie chicken?? That's exactly it!! Hahaha
Inside Haenggung Jangjak: seating, self-serve corner and QR ordering

I thought the inside would be cramped, but there's an inner room too, so there was actually plenty of seating. The 2nd floor is also usable~ Above all, this place is so popular that... haha, we nearly ended up waiting in line ourselves, phew. That's how popular it is! I also saw a lot of foreign visitors eating tongdak here!!

There's a self-serve corner, so grab your own water and extra side dishes there!

Each table has an ordering QR code, so ordering is a breeze!
What we ordered at Haenggung Jangjak and what it cost

Here's the menu~! There's a pretty wide variety of roast chicken options~~
- Corn cheese gratin sauce firewood-roasted chicken ₩27,000
- Rice cake (tteoksari) add-on ₩3,000
- Zero cola ₩3,500
This is what we ordered! Personally, I recommend adding the rice cake~ At another table someone ordered fries, and their chicken was piled high with fries on top haha

The basic side dishes come served like this~!
How does the corn cheese gratin sauce oak-fired chicken taste?

Isn't the presentation amazing?? It comes super hot, so eat carefully! And since it arrives still bubbling away, the sauce can splatter, so watch out for that too~ (I got a little sauce splash on me haha;;)
And the corn cheese is seriously piled high!!! The cheese stretched forever~~!! You know the drill, right? Wrap that cheese around the chicken and eat it that way haha

The chicken itself was pretty substantial too~~ Even though it must've lost a lot of fat from the long firewood roasting, it wasn't dry at all — so moist? And tender!! Also the sauce had a sweet, savory depth to it, so I kept dipping into it. It felt more like a barbecue sauce than a typical chicken sauce??

Why the 3,000 won rice cake add-on is worth ordering
The reason I recommend adding the rice cake (tteoksari)... it turned so soft and chewy that the outside crisped up like nurungji (scorched rice) — it was so delicious haha

Nurungji rice under the chicken, with chestnuts and jujubes
There was rice tucked underneath the chicken. It got properly pressed down into amazing nurungji (scorched rice)? Whether it was glutinous rice or not, the rice itself was chewy too haha

There were chestnuts and jujubes in there too :)

The nurungji turned out amazing, right?? Golden-browned and thick — so tasty! Exactly my style haha
Is Haenggung Jangjak worth a visit on Suwon's Chicken Street?
From my exploration, the chicken itself stayed moist and tender even after such a long roast. The sweet sauce added even more flavor, and the nurungji was fantastic~~ Definitely add the rice cake too :) hahaha
