I've been feeling a bit low on energy lately, so I thought about what to eat and ended up going for a proper recharge meal, haha.

This time I visited 99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch, an eel restaurant in Homaesil, Suwon. Even the name caught my eye — it plays on "eat eel until you're 99 and stay lively until 88," haha. If you like eel, this name isn't one you'll easily forget.

Where is 99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch, and where do you park?
99Jangeo88 Suwon Homaesil Branch is located at 24-70 Homaesil-ro 104beon-gil, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. It's within the Homaesil commercial area, so it's a convenient spot to stop by if you're already nearby, haha. According to the store notice, the basement 1st and 2nd floor lot offers 90 minutes of free parking, which made driving over quite convenient.
Just make sure to register your parking after finishing your meal, haha. The store is closed every Tuesday, so it's worth checking before you visit.

What the Homaesil eel restaurant looks like inside
The exterior is easy to spot from a distance thanks to the huge 99Jangeo88 sign. The phrase "since 1996" also caught my eye, and seeing that only raised my expectations, haha.

Inside, the space was bigger than expected with tables spaced out comfortably. The wood-toned tables and warm lighting gave it that classic cozy eel-restaurant feel, haha. It seemed like a fine spot for a family meal or dining with parents.

99Jangeo88 menu and prices
The menu had more variety than I expected — salt-grilled freshwater eel, seasoned-grilled eel, eel rice bowl, eel soup, freshwater spicy fish stew, and more. When I visited, the board listed the salt-grilled platter at ₩72,000 and the seasoned-grilled platter at ₩76,000, with half-portions available too, haha. At lunch there are lighter options like eel rice bowl or eel soup, so you don't have to order a full platter every time.

There's a separate lunch special menu too, so I'd like to come back for lunch next time, haha.

Salt-grilled freshwater eel with shredded ginger: the best bite
And finally, the eel arrived! A full platter neatly lined with eel looked great from the moment it landed on the table, haha. The eel comes pre-seared, so you only need to finish grilling it a bit more at the table.

A staff member grilled the eel to the perfect state for eating, and watching it turn golden brown on the grill made the wait feel like the longest part, haha.
The flesh was plump and thick, so each piece felt satisfyingly weighty from the first bite. The surface crisped up slightly while the inside stayed moist and tender, giving it a great texture, haha. Being salt-grilled, it was a good way to taste the eel's own savory flavor. I ate the first few pieces plain, then tried dipping in sauce and topping with ginger strips — personally, the eel-and-ginger combo was my favorite, haha. The sharp kick of the ginger cut through the eel's richness, so it never felt too greasy even after several pieces.

Side dishes like pickles and perilla leaves were also on the table, adding some fun in mixing up the combination with each bite of eel, haha. Alternating eel with side dishes kept things fresh in the mouth. And since the eel comes pre-seared rather than raw, finishing it off on the grill made the whole meal much easier, haha.

Eel isn't cheap, so it's not something you can eat often, but it's definitely the dish that comes to mind when you want to recharge on a rough day.
