Byeongjeom squid stir-fry and fried squid with ice cream bar: Haetan

While hunting for a good restaurant in Byeongjeom, I went to Haetan, known for both its huge size and its great taste! I was craving spicy, savory squid dishes that day, and I was already excited just walking in.

Where Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom is and when it opens

Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom is on the 2nd floor at 1024 Hyohaeng-ro, Byeongjeom-gu, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, and it's open from 11am to 10:30pm. You can park on the roadside.

Haetan is on the 2nd floor of the building, but the sign is so big it's easy to spot even from outside.

They're open 365 days a year and also run lunch specials~! Not many places are open every day these days, and with Chuseok coming up soon, this seems like a great spot to bring the whole family.

On the wall along the stairs up to the 2nd floor, there's a nicely detailed explanation of the Haetan brand, so it was fun to read on the way up. I really love squid dishes, so my expectations were sky-high even before walking in.

Inside the dining room and how tablet ordering works

Walking into Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom, the space was much bigger and more spacious than I expected. It's bright and kept clean, so I thought it would be perfect for family meals, group dinners, or gatherings.

Every table has a tablet for ordering, so I could look through the menu slowly and order at my own pace. On one side of the tablet screen there was info on 'how to enjoy Haetan 100%' and a Naver receipt review event, so it might be worth checking out.

The self-serve bar: rice, cold bean sprout soup and side dishes

Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom has a really solid setup for basic side dishes and the self-serve bar. From rice to cool, refreshing cold bean sprout soup and neatly arranged side dishes, you can help yourself to as much as you want at the self-serve bar.

The side dishes pair really well with the spicy squid dishes, so I could enjoy the whole meal without ever running short.

They had the side dishes prepped and set out even before the main dishes arrived! There's a tray, so it's easy to carry everything at once.

How did the squid stir-fry taste?

Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom's signature dish, squid stir-fry, was impressive right from the start with its mouthwatering red sauce. The squid wasn't chewy at all — it was plump and had a moist, springy texture.

The spicy-sweet sauce with a hint of smoky char soaked all the way into the squid, and mixed into rice it was an absolute rice thief.

Wrapped with the side dishes from the self-serve bar, the crunchy texture made it even more delicious.

Fried squid: how big is the portion and how crisp is it?

The second dish, fried squid, came out freshly fried, hot and remarkably crispy. The portion was quite generous! The batter wasn't overly thick and stayed crunchy, while the squid inside was big and tender, with a savory flavor spreading through my mouth with every bite.

The squid was plump and packed full — genuinely delicious. Dipping it into the spicy squid stir-fry sauce was an amazing combination.

Free ice cream corner after the meal

Once you finish eating, there's a corner where you can enjoy ice cream for dessert. It was the perfect way to cool down and clean up my palate, which was still tingling from the spicy sauce — a perfect meal right to the very end.
