Flounder sashimi with salt gimbap and gyeduman noodles: Susan Jang
In short
Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch is a Japanese-style izakaya near Yeongtong Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi, serving fresh seafood dishes alongside sake and soju. On a repeat visit, the writer ordered flounder sashimi with salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll), ankimo, and gyeduman (spicy ramyeon with two eggs), starting with a satisfying complimentary flounder tempura. The combination of flounder sashimi, salt gimbap, aged kimchi, and wasabi is the standout memory from this visit.

A wooden sign and an aquarium out front make an impression
The exterior of this Yeongtong Station favorite is marked by a wooden sign reminiscent of a log cabin. There's an aquarium near the entrance, which gave me the sense even before stepping inside that this place takes its seafood seriously. The recommended dishes listed outside give you a rough idea of what kind of food they serve, right?😊

From 2-tops to dotch seating, a wood-toned Japanese-style interior
Step inside and you'll find a space defined by a wood-toned, Japanese-style interior. There are various seating types — 4-tops, 2-tops, 6-tops, and even dotch seating — so it's a good spot for dates, drinks with friends, or larger group gatherings. The overall atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, which should appeal to anyone looking for a Yeongtong Station bar or izakaya.

A drink lineup with a wide range of sake
Another charm of Susan Jang is its drink selection! Along with soju and beer, they carry a wide variety of sake, giving plenty of choice for anyone who wants to pair seafood dishes with a drink. We spent a good while deciding what to order alongside our food, haha.

The complimentary side dish: fried flounder
Every table comes with cho-jang (vinegar-chili sauce), soy sauce, and a small dish of sauce as standard. After ordering, the complimentary side dish that arrived was fried flounder! It was substantial enough that calling it just a 'complimentary side dish' felt like an understatement, and it put me in a good mood right from the start.😆

The flesh came apart easily and had no fishy smell, freshly fried so the outside was crispy and the inside moist and savory. Even the complimentary fried dish was delicious, which naturally raised my expectations for the main dishes.

Flounder sashimi and salt gimbap: how to eat it for the best flavor
And finally, today's main dish! The flounder sashimi and salt gimbap arrived, and the plating was simply clean and neat. They say good-looking rice cakes taste good too, right? Seeing the flounder sashimi and salt gimbap so neatly arranged put me in a good mood before I even took a bite.😊

Flounder sashimi is delicious just dipped in soy sauce or cho-jang, but we tried it several different ways. In particular, placing flounder sashimi on top of the salt gimbap along with aged kimchi and wasabi made for a fantastic combination. The salty gimbap, the soft flounder, the tangy aged kimchi, and the sharp kick of wasabi together made it impossible to stop reaching for more! The flounder itself was aged, giving it a soft, clean texture with real depth of flavor. There's a reason I keep coming back to this Yeongtong favorite.

Ankimo served with crackers
For a side dish, we first ordered ankimo. Ankimo is a delicate monkfish liver dish, and it came plated with crackers. At first I wondered, 'Will soft monkfish liver really go with buttery coconut crackers?' But once we tried them together, the pairing was surprisingly good. The soft, savory ankimo combined with the crisp, sweet crackers in a way I didn't expect, and it was fun to discover. I almost want to try recreating it at home sometime, haha.

Ending the night with gyeduman, ramyeon with two eggs
We wrapped up with gyeduman, a dish I fell for on my last visit! It's ramyeon (instant noodles) with two eggs beaten into the broth, and the spicy, piping hot soup made it the perfect way to end a night of drinking. With plenty of egg mixed in, it feels softer and heartier than regular ramyeon. After finishing it off, the hot broth left me feeling warmed all the way through.🍜
Final thoughts after a repeat visit
Overall, the food quality was great and I enjoyed being able to pair seafood dishes with a wide range of drinks at this Suwon favorite, Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch. The flounder sashimi and salt gimbap in particular were memorable for the fun of trying them in different combinations. If you're near Yeongtong Station looking for good seafood and a drink, Susan Jang is worth a visit as a Yeongtong Station restaurant or bar. This was my honest repeat-visit review, and once again, I ate very well.🧡
