Gangneung noodle restaurant with spicy bibim makguksu: Gossi's

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a makguksu (buckwheat noodle) and sundubu kalguksu (soft tofu noodle soup) specialist right in front of Gangmun Beach. It's open daily from 10:00 to 20:30, with a break time from 15:30 to 17:00 and last order at 20:00. It closes for one day after major holidays.

This place appeared on Live Tonight, episode 1999. It offers group seating, takeout, delivery, reservations, Wi-Fi, separate men's/women's restrooms, high chairs, a wheelchair-accessible entrance, and dog-friendly seating (check the conditions if you're bringing a dog).

My friend and I were looking for lunch near Gangmun Beach during a Gangneung trip and ended up at Gossi's Donghae Makguksu Main Branch. I'd seen it recommended by locals a lot as a Gangneung must-eat spot, and turns out they have way more than just makguksu — buckwheat gimbap and sundubu dishes too?! What I loved most was being able to eat while looking straight out at Gangmun Beach 🌊 🍽️

Where is Gossi's Donghae Makguksu, and where do you park?

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu Main Branch is at 25 Changhae-ro 350beon-gil, Gangneung, Gangwon, South Korea. It's right in front of Gangmun Beach, so it's a great spot for a beach walk before or after your meal.

Our table had a full window view straight out over Gangmun Beach, which made for a great ocean view while eating. Even on a cloudy day, a sea view is always a win -🩵 Most of the window-side ocean-view tables are set up as two-tops or solo-dining spots, so it seems like a great choice for couples on a date.

For parking, you can use Gangmun Beach Public Parking Lots 1 and 2. The first hour is free, and if you need more time, the counter said they can extend it by 30 minutes on request. Parking is free if you leave before 11am or enter after 6pm; otherwise it's ₩600 for the first 30 minutes and ₩300 per 10 minutes after that, so keep that in mind.

Inside Gossi's: ocean-view seats and the dog-friendly area

The interior of Gossi's Donghae Makguksu Main Branch is spacious with generous spacing between tables. You get the Gangmun Beach ocean view from the window side, and there are plenty of tables good for larger groups. There were a lot of group and family customers, so I'd recommend it as a Gangmun Beach, Gangneung spot for visiting with parents or kids too!! 👍

Ordering was simple via the tablet installed at each table.

Dog-friendly seating is designated on the 3rd floor or in a separate annex, and ⚠️ dogs aren't allowed on the floor inside the main dining area. If you're planning to visit with a pet, it's worth checking the rules in advance.

Spicy bibim makguksu, 11,000 won

My appetite hadn't fully woken up yet since it was still morning, but the sweet-and-tangy sauce on the spicy bibim makguksu snapped it right back haha. It came piled with plenty of cucumber and toppings, and the buckwheat noodles were chewy yet clean-tasting, which paired really well with the spicy sauce.

Perilla oil makguksu with its own broth

The perilla oil makguksu was, as expected, excellent — the nutty aroma of perilla oil mixed with seaweed flakes and sesame seeds.

After mixing it thoroughly, I added a bit of the accompanying broth and it got moister with a much richer savory depth — really good. I'd also had great perilla oil makguksu in Sokcho recently, so now I'm wondering if Gangwon-do just does perilla oil makguksu especially well; this one hit my taste again too.. smiling

Two buckwheat gimbap rolls: flying fish roe and soy-marinated pork

The soy-marinated pork buckwheat gimbap was salty-savory and packed with pork, making it quite filling, while the flying fish roe buckwheat gimbap had a fresh combination of popping roe texture and crunchy vegetables!

What else is on the Gossi's menu besides makguksu?

Besides makguksu, Gossi's Donghae Makguksu Main Branch also has spicy sundubu kalguksu, perilla seed sundubu kalguksu, and plain sundubu, so there's plenty of choice if you're after a Gangneung sundubu spot or if your family members have different tastes :) If you're looking for a Gangneung restaurant recommendation, definitely add this one to your travel route.
