Makguksu (buckwheat cold noodles) is one of those must-eat foods whenever you head to Gangwon-do!! I had a trip to Gangneung coming up and was wondering where to try it this time, when a local friend recommended a place, so I went to check it out.

We came deliberately at an early hour so we could go straight in!! Gossi's Donghae Makguksu is pretty spacious — with seating up to the 3rd floor, it seemed great for group visits too.

How do the fermented pollock bibim makguksu and mul makguksu taste?

The visuals alone were spectacular at Gossi's Donghae Makguksu!! The portions looked generous from the start and it all looked so appetizing.

A generously portioned bowl of makguksu

My top pick, the bibim makguksu!! It wasn't just plain bibim — it was packed with myeongtae sikhae (fermented pollock), which made it even better.

First off, the sweet sauce was absolutely top-notch — it's the kind of style anyone can enjoy, so it's easy to love without much divide in taste. And since they said it's self-made noodles, the buckwheat noodles themselves were nutty and just the best!

The mul makguksu looked refreshing just by sight! Like naengmyeon, the tangy, sour broth was charming, and the moment I took a bite, all the heat just vanished — so good.

It was great to eat alongside the bibim for a different kind of charm!

Sundubu kalguksu and pork suyuk: the two dishes not to skip

The sundubu kalguksu (soft tofu noodle soup) that I would have regretted skipping!! I originally came only for the makguksu, but ordered this since I saw a lot of people around eating it, and it turned out to be a great call.

Spicy broth of the sundubu kalguksu

The smell was incredible from the moment it arrived, and it was spicy and hot and just so delicious!!

The soft, silky sundubu was nutty and delicious too, and above all the noodles were chewy, which made it even more satisfying.

And the best side dish, pork suyuk (boiled pork)!! The pork itself was cut thick and so delicious — there was no gamey smell at all, which I liked, and the meat itself was tender, which made it even better.

It went perfectly together with the makguksu!!

Is Gossi's Donghae Makguksu worth one noodle meal in Gangneung?

I enjoyed it all thoroughly along with the nutty buckwheat makgeolli! Living up to being a local friend's pick, Gossi's Donghae Makguksu in Gangneung was so satisfying!! From the location to the menu lineup to the taste, everything was perfect, so definitely stop by if you're heading to Gangneung~
