Suwon Hommaesil single-serving doenjang hot pot lunch: Ok Doenjang
In short
Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch is a doenjang (soybean paste) hot pot restaurant on Geumgok-ro in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. At lunch we ordered two different single servings — snail doenjang hot pot for ₩11,000 and beef tendon doenjang hot pot for ₩12,000 — plus a snail minari (water dropwort) pancake for ₩15,000; the snail hot pot was nutty and not salty, while the beef tendon one was noticeably saltier. Because Ok Doenjang takes orders by the single serving, it is an easy lunch stop for two people who want different hot pots.

I couldn't be bothered with much, but I still had to eat, so I made a reservation and headed to Hommaesil for a late lunch. I visited Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch for a doenjang (soybean paste) hot pot that tastes rich and savory even with simple ingredients.

How to get to Ok Doenjang in Suwon's Hommaesil area

Even from the outside, it has a retro vibe. Apparently during the day it's a lunch spot serving doenjang hot pot with rice, and in the evening it turns into a bar serving boiled pork as a drinking snack. We came for a meal, so we were here for the doenjang hot pot.

Before you go inside, you can check out a rough overview of the menu items posted outside. Lunch menu and evening drinking menu!
Booking Ok Doenjang on Naver, and what the Hommaesil dining room looks like
We booked through Naver reservations and sat at the reserved table. But we'd booked for 2pm, which turned out to overlap with the break time right after lunch service. I found out later that there was a detailed note in the reservation reply saying to 'arrive before 2pm.' Once a reservation is accepted, you don't really go back and check the details, right? haha, just in case, it's worth checking the details. Or honestly, I wish the system would switch to contacting people directly by phone number instead.
The interior also has that retro feel mixed with modern touches. There are 4-person and 2-person tables — quite a variety, plus sofa seating, so keep that in mind. In one corner there's a little area selling sesame oil and seaweed.
There's a window-side interior that feels like something out of an old modern history museum, haha. The window-side 2-person tables have one induction burner each, while the 4-person tables have two.
Here's the basic table setting: a whole tin of seaweed, an hourglass timer, small plates, tongs, and water. Good for eating as much seaweed as you like.

I wondered why there was an hourglass, but it turns out it's a necessary tool for enjoying the doenjang hot pot properly, haha. Next to the induction burner there are instructions for enjoying the boiled pork hot pot and doenjang hot pot, plus info on any current promotions — worth checking if you're interested.

Ok Doenjang menu prices: hot pots are ₩2,000 cheaper at lunch
Here's the menu board. There's a wide variety: braised beef short ribs, set menus, and several types of doenjang hot pot. There's also soft tofu hot pot, boiled pork hot pot, and specialty dishes. The doenjang and soft tofu hot pots are ₩2,000 cheaper at lunch than dinner, so there's a real price gap between the two times. If you're looking for a good lunch spot near Hommaesil, keep this in mind — lunch is the better deal.
What we ordered at Ok Doenjang

- Snail doenjang hot pot, 1 serving ₩11,000 (lunch)
- Beef tendon doenjang hot pot, 1 serving ₩12,000 (lunch)
- Snail minari pancake ₩15,000
- Extra rice ₩1,000
Since there were two induction burners and single servings were allowed, we picked two different flavors of doenjang hot pot. Rice comes included by default.
The default side dishes were stir-fried fish cake and what looked like stir-fried kimchi, or braised kimchi. They're perfect as rice side dishes, so they went nicely with the rice.

The seaweed straight from the tin was also tasty, another good side dish to eat with rice.

Snail doenjang hot pot, ₩11,000 per serving: nutty, not salty
Do you like snails? I love them. I even make snail doenjang stew at home often ヾ(•ω•`)o A handful of snails, soft tofu tucked in, and minari (water dropwort) with its strong, distinctive fragrance, on top.
Stew-type dishes can often be too heavily seasoned and end up leaving a lot uneaten, but this one was savory without being salty, so it was easy to finish. The pot itself isn't big and it's shallow, so it's really just right for one serving. It seems perfect as a lunch menu if you want a simple solo meal.

Following the cooking instructions provided, they even beat in an egg for us! They kept stirring so the egg wouldn't stick to the bottom, and made sure not to break up the soft tofu too much, haha. You can see the snails, zucchini, and potato in there too.

The savory broth, chewy snails, soft tofu, egg — the combination works, and the fragrant minari ties it all together. As a doenjang hot pot, it's rich and savory, and if you like Korean food you'll likely be satisfied. I liked it so much I finished every last drop of broth. As a lunch spot in Geumgok-dong, Suwon, the snail hot pot in particular suited my taste.

Beef tendon doenjang hot pot, ₩12,000 per serving: saltier seasoning
Tofu, beef tendon, and minari — again, simple ingredients, but tasty. The seasoning is stronger than the snail doenjang hot pot. After finishing the snail version, we started right into the beef tendon one, added an extra bowl of rice, and split it half and half.

The broth is savory, but with more of a punch! The seasoning is saltier. Since the bowl is shallow, it comes to a boil pretty quickly, so you don't have to wait long before digging in.
Beef tendon is similar to but different from doganitang (ox knee cartilage) — doganitang has a chewier texture, while tendon is softer, a bit gelatinous, with a slight chewiness. There were about 6 pieces of tendon, and even people who don't usually enjoy tendon ate it happily. I like a chewy texture, so I was satisfied. Having soaked up the doenjang broth, it turns nicely gelatinous and soft, easy to eat.
The standout feature is the strong, fragrant minari aroma, which pairs really well with the savory doenjang base. I don't usually enjoy minari much, but eaten this way, it's actually great.

Snail minari pancake, ₩15,000: chewy snails and strong minari aroma
A pancake with a firm, chewy texture and a strong minari fragrance. I'm honestly not a huge fan of minari, but this pancake was delicious. Snails are tucked in throughout — firm and chewy with a nice texture.

The ingredients look simple — snails, chili, and what appears to be minari — but it was surprisingly tasty. The edges are grilled crisp and golden. It's clean-tasting yet has a strong minari fragrance. It was so good I'm thinking of trying to make minari pancake at home too, haha. I ate this after the hot pots, so it was a bit later than ideal, and I thought it might feel a little oily from sitting, but there was no greasiness at all — it was delicious. Dipping it in the accompanying sauce makes it even better.
Is Ok Doenjang worth it? A Geumgok-dong lunch with one flavor each
Minari appeared in every dish we ordered, giving it a fragrant yet bold flavor that ties everything together harmoniously. The doenjang hot pot is savory, and with toppings like snail and beef tendon, there's a good variety to choose from based on your taste. Most hot pot or stew places require a minimum order of 2 servings, but here you can order single servings, so you can pick different flavors and try a variety.
Chewy snails, gelatinous-chewy beef tendon, and minari — that combination just works. If you're looking for a simple yet savory and satisfying Korean lunch, or searching for a good lunch spot in Geumgok-dong, this is worth checking out.
