Suwon Korean restaurant for family soup: Jeju Eunhuine

My sibling, back from overseas after two years, my mother, and I were finally all together again. Since it had been so long, we wanted a proper meal—but when it was time to eat, all I could think about was a steaming bowl of gukbap (rice soup). They say seasonal-flu season is going around lately, and suddenly I really, really wanted hot haejangguk (hangover soup).

A bowl of rice with hot broth seemed like something all three of us could enjoy, so we revisited Jeju Eunhuine Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch (제주은희네해장국 수원인계점), which I remembered being so delicious last time. To give you the conclusion first, whenever I need a simple gukbap meal in Ingye-dong from now on, Jeju Eunhuine Haejangguk will probably be the first place that comes to mind.

Each of us ordered a basic hangover soup. And because gukbap alone felt a little incomplete, we added a small dombe meat dish and shared it between the three of us. It was such a good combination.

The side dishes came out first, one serving each. The kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) here was seriously a work of art. Rice refills are unlimited too, so it was wonderfully filling.

A word of warning: the peppers have quite a kick. The kkakdugi was crisp in a way that made you want a refill. My sibling does not handle spicy food very well, so we ordered their hangover soup without the dadaegi, a spicy seasoning paste.

The hangover soup contains bean sprouts, ugeoji (softened leafy greens), meat, and seonji, or congealed beef blood. Unless you really dislike seonji, I would say there is no need to leave it out here.

Of course, if you absolutely cannot eat seonji, you should leave it out. But the pieces were quite large and had none of that distinctive off smell, so even picky me could enjoy them so much.

Some people hesitate over gukbap because of seonji's distinctive flavor, but this was clean without any off smell, so it went nicely with the broth.

I especially liked that the seonji was in big pieces rather than crumbling into tiny bits. Since I like seonji, I was actually happy to find a hearty hangover soup filled with substantial chunks like these.

The choice I personally think I made very well on this return visit was the dombe meat. We ordered the small portion and shared it among the three of us. Gukbap alone can feel a little plain, but adding dombe meat made the table feel much more abundant.

Jeju-style dombe meat is meat placed and sliced on a cutting board, and it is similar to suyuk, or boiled pork. It is a fantastic match with warm gukbap.

When you want a simple meal near Suwon City Hall Station

Ingye-dong has so many restaurants that choosing lunch can actually become difficult.

Especially for anyone looking for a work lunch or a simple meal around Suwon City Hall Station, there are times when you want gukbap that can be ordered and eaten relatively quickly rather than somewhere where food takes a long time to arrive. That was exactly my situation that day.

It was a gathering of three—my sibling, back after two years, my mother, and me—but we were already full. Still, it felt a shame to end with something quick at a café, while a heavy meal also felt like too much.

I think that is when you end up searching for gukbap while looking for good places to eat near Suwon City Hall Station. A hot broth with rice is satisfying for your stomach, and one hangover soup alone makes a complete meal.

After revisiting this time, I thought it was a place best suited to days when you are craving one steaming bowl of gukbap, rather than a day when you are going out for a flashy meal.

It is good for mornings when your stomach feels empty, days when you drank the night before and crave hangover soup, or any day you suddenly want hot broth. You can order without seonji or dadaegi according to your preference, so I think it can be a meal everyone is happy with.
