Suwon sushi restaurant for solo dining: Teukbyeolhan Chobap

I revisited Teukbyeolhan Chobap (특별한초밥), a Yeongtong sushi favorite I had thought, “It’s great value and the staff are so kind—I have to come back!” Every visit has been a solo meal, but that is absolutely no problem here. The fish was still fresh and delicious, and I was just as satisfied on my return visit! Let me tell you about it.

It is a five-minute walk from Exit 1 of Yeongtong Station. You will find it on the second floor of Classia Yeongtong, near Jjang Arcade and the dining alley packed with bars and restaurants.

You can park in the commercial building’s underground garage, with free parking provided for the length of your meal.

I had heard there can sometimes be a wait because it is such a popular Yeongtong restaurant. When I went around 6 p.m. on a weekday there was a line, but arriving just after 5 p.m. was much more relaxed. It is handy to check the queue in advance and join remotely through the Catchtable app.

There are four-person tables farther inside, but please note that these seats are away from the rail, so you need to order separately.

True to its name, what felt especially special was the staff’s service. It was not a routine “thank you” or “enjoy your meal”; their bright tone made it seem like they genuinely enjoyed working, and simply being in the space put me in a good mood. They also worked hard to make the food with care.

There are more than 50 choices—including roll gunkan sushi, fried items, desserts, fish, sashimi, steak, and seafood—and every one costs ₩1,890. I wondered: is this Yeongtong Station sushi spot famous for value simply because it is a little cheaper than other conveyor-belt sushi chains? I had to find out for myself… dun dun dun.

For sides, there are yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef in chilled spicy broth), fish cake soup, udon, cold soba, and albap (rice with fish roe), plus takeaway options. Perhaps because there are so many soup dishes, the guests beside me were even having soju.

Table accompaniments

Each table has the usual conveyor-belt sushi accompaniments: ginger, pickled scallions, wasabi, and soy sauce. Not every item comes with wasabi, so you can add it to your taste.

There were lots of chefs working inside, making tuna gunkan sushi, raw shrimp, sauced salmon, gamtae seaweed shrimp, and more.

At Teukbyeolhan Chobap in Yeongtong, when someone orders an item, they make that table’s plate and deliver it directly. While they are at it, they make several extra plates too, calling out that the item has come out—and I love that. But they call it out in such a sweet tone… can someone really enjoy work that much? Thoughts to ponder while eating alone… I’m not an F; I’m 90% T.

When salmon belly or beef tataki came out, they would call, “Here comes a special menu item~!” That made me think, “What, it’s special?” and pick up a plate for no reason. Even the watermelon came in three big slices for ₩1,890, so anyone living alone is better off eating it here… ^^ It is perfect for a solo meal in Yeongtong too.

The fish portions were larger than the rice. Just looking at them makes you think, “Wow, ₩1,890 really is amazing value.” I officially recognize it as a great Yeongtong sushi spot!

What I ate across two visits

The scallop cheese sushi was so delicious that I had two. The volcano tuna was incredible too, and the salmon belly was fresh and wonderfully rich—in a good way.

On my second visit, I tried aged-kimchi flounder and salmon steak for the first time, and they were truly the best. It had somehow become even tastier than on my first visit(?) As I looked around the rail, a staff member first asked whether there was anything I wanted. When I was nearly done with my soup, another came over and asked, “Would you like some more?” What a world of kindness~~!

The reason it has so many reviews and even a wait is not simply that it is a little cheaper than other chains—it is just delicious. And then it is kind, and inexpensive too! It is popular because it checks every box… My willingness to revisit: 13,746,382 points. I recognize it as a Yeongtong Station sushi favorite.
