I was looking for a place worth visiting for anyone who loves eel, and that's how I ended up at Gochang Pungcheon Eel! It started in 2003 in a tiny 13-pyeong shop and has been run as a grilled eel specialist on the same spot for over 20 years, which made me even more excited to try it.

Inside Gochang Pungcheon Eel: is there a private room?
To mark its 20th year, Gochang Pungcheon Eel apparently tore everything down and fully remodeled. Visiting in person, the place was clean and well-equipped with private rooms, so it seemed like a solid choice for a family meal or an eel-focused work dinner too. What we ordered that day were the salt-grilled eel, eel hotpot rice, and Jangsu eel soup.

Salt-grilled eel, ₩35,000 for 300–310g of eel
First up was the dish I was most looking forward to — the salt-grilled eel! At an actual weight of 300–310g for ₩35,000, they use select premium Japonica eel raised for under 20 months. Grilled plain with just salt, no seasoning, you could really taste the eel's own clean, savory flavor.

Full tableside grilling: staff grill every piece for you
What I liked most was the full grilling service — staff grill the eel for you, so eating is completely hassle-free. Eel's flavor changes quite a bit depending on how it's grilled, and since the staff grilled it just right, all we had to do was wait and dig in. So nice.

Jindo green onion kimchi, the side dish that steals the meal
The side dishes that came with the grilled eel were clean and well made, and especially the paegimchi (green onion kimchi) made with Jindo scallions paired perfectly with the eel. Eel can get a bit rich, but the paegimchi cut right through it and kept me reaching for more.

Eel hotpot rice with a whole eel on top, ₩22,000
Personally, one of the most memorable dishes of the day was the eel hotpot rice at ₩22,000. It's hotpot rice with a whole eel sitting on top, so the visual alone was impressive, and eating the warm rice together with the eel was hearty and savory in the best way.

Jangsu eel soup simmered 12 hours, ₩10,000, to finish
Lastly, we ordered the Jangsu eel soup at ₩10,000! It's apparently simmered directly for around 12 hours, and the broth was rich but never heavy, warming you up from the inside. It was the perfect way to finish after the grilled eel. Rather than just eating the grilled eel alone, having the hotpot rice and soup alongside made it a really filling, complete meal.
What stood out most was that this place has kept its original spirit while running as an eel specialist for over 20 years, and now with the remodel, the space is clean and would work well for a family gathering or a meal with parents too.

Baby chairs and eating out with a child at Gochang Pungcheon Eel
And for anyone visiting with a child, you'll be glad to know baby chairs are available. When we eat out with our kid, whether there's a baby chair or not quietly matters a lot, and having one here made the meal much more comfortable.
How to get there from Sangdong Station, and where to park
Gochang Pungcheon Eel is located in the restaurant alley on the road behind Save Zone, just out of Exit 7/8 of Sangdong Station, so it wasn't hard to find at all, and with 2 hours of free parking at the same building's parking tower on floors 2–5, it was also convenient to visit by car. If you love eel, give the clean-tasting salt-grilled eel, the eel hotpot rice, and the Jangsu eel soup a proper try. Gochang Pungcheon Eel, the Sangdong Station eel spot that's held its ground for so long — you could really feel why. This meal was a total win :)

When eating out with a child, the taste of the food matters, but so does the vibe of the place and its amenities. Here, with baby chairs ready and private rooms available, it felt completely stress-free to visit as a family. The space is spacious and cleanly remodeled, so it also seemed like a good spot for bringing along parents or hosting a group gathering. And since staff grill the eel for you, you can chat and eat comfortably, which makes it well suited for work dinners too.
