Sokcho bakery potato bread and jjondeugi for solo drinks: Bultan Gamja
In short
Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread is a squid-ink potato bread bakery on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. A 4-pack of potato bread costs 10,000 won and a 12-pack of Sokcho jjondeugi (chewy squid snack) costs 10,000 won; the writer received one box, ate it outdoors, then bought a second box as a gift for her parents. The potato bread is nutty rather than sweet, so both parents and kids finished it, and the jjondeugi was the perfect snack for drinking alone.

As a self-proclaimed (and other-proclaimed) bread lover, this place completely won me over on my Sokcho trip — a spot with a striking, unusual look and a healthy taste to match. Here's my takeout review of Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread.

Graffiti exterior and sofa seats: inside the Sokcho bakery
The store's entrance grabs your attention right away with its vivid, colorful graffiti art. Behind the hip exterior is a hidden philosophy of healthy eating.

Step inside and there's a spacious area with comfortable leather sofas where you can sit and relax — great for eating in.

One corner of the store is packed with celebrity autographs and cute figurines, which made for a fun little browse.

Why the potato bread is black: squid ink and deep sea water
The potato bread here has a distinctively jet-black look, apparently made to recall the memory of potatoes roasted in an old-fashioned wood-fired oven.

Instead of artificial coloring, they use squid ink to capture the color of Sokcho, and the dough is made with deep sea water from the East Sea for an extra health boost. Made fresh daily with no synthetic additives — that's reassuring to hear.
Chewy outside, moist inside — and better for not being sweet

There was a whole fridge of drinks — cold watermelon juice, organic sodas — but I wanted to enjoy mine outside at leisure, so I got the potato bread to go.

Parking was really convenient too, so I could just zip in and pick it up.
The nutty flavor that won over both my parents and my child
Cut the potato bread in half and you'll see the outside is coated in domestic grain powders like black sesame and black beans, giving it a nice chewiness, while the inside is packed with nutty potato paste. Instead of relying on artificial sweetness, they roast and peel the potatoes themselves to bring out the natural sweetness of Gangwon-do potatoes.

Honestly, I originally received one box through a great opportunity, but after one bite — it was so nutty and delicious that I immediately bought another box as a gift for my parents. Even they, who aren't big on sweets, said it hit the spot perfectly and were really satisfied.

Kids love it too when paired with a glass of milk — a great nutritious snack for the whole family.

Leftovers are perfect for stashing in the freezer and pulling out one at a time whenever you're craving one, and delivery is available too, so I think I'll be ordering this again from time to time. Though honestly... I ate mine all on the spot, so there was nothing left to freeze... The subtle sweetness and nutty flavor never get old, so you really can just keep eating haha.
Salty, chewy Sokcho jjondeugi: an unexpected beer thief
The Sokcho squid-flavored jjondeugi (chewy squid snack), sold alongside the potato bread at Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread, is another hidden gem you absolutely shouldn't skip.

From picnic snack to solo drinking snack at home
I nibbled on the jjondeugi, which has a cute pink squid character printed on the package, while walking around near Sokcho Beach. It wasn't tough at all, just chewy with a savory kick that kept my hand reaching back for more.

I kept picking at it outside, and at some point I realized — this is absolutely a beer snack — so I brought the rest home with me haha.

There's no better snack to have with a quiet solo drink after putting the kids to bed. It really captures the character of Gangwon-do, so I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a not-so-obvious souvenir from Sokcho. The chewy, nutty smell of potato bread will make your Sokcho trip even sweeter 🤍
