Songjeong-dong pork galbi with weekday wait: Jeongwon Galbi, Gwangju
In short
Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch is a charcoal-grilled pork galbi (pork short rib) restaurant on Gyeongancheon-ro in Songjeong-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. The order was two servings of Jeongwon seasoned galbi plus chadol doenjang sulbap (brisket and soybean-paste rice), a bowl of rice, and mul naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles in broth), with the extra rice added only because the seasoned crab side dish was that good. Even on a weekday evening there was a wait, and the mild marinade and tender meat make Jeongwon Galbi a 200% return visit.

A day when I really craved pork galbi! I went to Jeongwon Galbi (정원갈비), a famous pork galbi restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi.
Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch was already known as a galbi hotspot in Gwangju, and there was a waiting line even on a weekday evening, haha! So let me introduce this genuinely great restaurant.
Parking and seating at Jeongwon Galbi in Songjeong-dong
Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch is on Gyeongancheon-ro, and there's ample parking in front and behind the restaurant, so there didn't seem to be any risk of running short on spots!

Inside, it's not private rooms, but the high partitions made it even better — it really felt private and I liked that a lot.

What is on the menu at Jeongwon Galbi?
Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch was also great value! True to its name as a galbi restaurant, they had a wide variety of beef galbi and pork galbi ready — not just value sets and Korean beef, but also a lunch special set, rice dishes, desserts, and sides! They really sold a wide range of things.
During the meal, the Cheongdo minari galbitang (water dropwort short rib soup) menu looked so delicious I wanted to come back and try it next time.
On top of that, they were also running a great-value Instagram drink event. It's not hard to join, so total win, haha.
How does the charcoal-grilled seasoned galbi for two taste?
I came today because I really wanted pork galbi, so I ordered the seasoned pork galbi (2 servings), chadol doenjang sulbap, and a bowl of rice!

Actually, I hadn't planned on ordering a bowl of rice, but the side dishes were so delicious, especially this seasoned crab — ugh, it was so good that I wanted to eat it with plain white rice, so I ordered one!

On top of that, if you run out of any side dish or want extras, they're ready at the self bar, so you can just help yourself. The self bar was kept really clean too, which made everything look even more delicious.

Jeongwon Galbi is even better because it's charcoal-grilled. Pork galbi grilled over charcoal — need I say more, ugh. You don't even need to try it to know it's amazing.

The meat was thick with good knife scoring, and the seasoning had soaked all the way through — I was already drooling, ugh.

Pork galbi burns quickly if you look away, so someone who's good at grilling really has to be in charge of it full-time... Looking back at the photos, I want to eat it again, ugh.
The color alone was amazing... plus there was a lot of lean meat, so the portion was generous to begin with!!

Meat grilled to a nice golden brown! Well-grilled meat like this really has the seasoning cling to your mouth with every bite, and it was so delicious. The meat wasn't overly sweet or strongly flavored — instead, it had a mild seasoning that had soaked in well, and the meat itself was so, so tender!!!!!! It was the kind of flavor that makes you say 'delicious' out loud the moment it hits your mouth.

Wrapping it up neatly in lettuce — all the side dishes were delicious too, so mixing and matching them bite by bite was absolutely heavenly!!
Sides to order: chadol doenjang sulbap and mul naengmyeon

The doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice) I decided to order the moment I saw the menu — a rich, spicy doenjang stew that just looks delicious paired with rice, need I say more. Add a piece of well-fermented kimchi and you could finish a whole bowl of rice with this alone, no meat needed. I really scraped the bowl clean.

No matter how full you are, you just can't give up the naengmyeon-and-galbi combo, ugh. I personally like thin noodles like this for cold noodles at a galbi restaurant.

Dessert at Jeongwon Galbi: 500-won ice cream and free plum tea
A place that's thorough all the way to dessert! You can even get ice cream for just ₩500, and there was free plum tea too.

Walking out after the meal, there was still a waiting line even though it was a weekday evening — I thought, this really is a genuine hotspot. Jeongwon Galbi is a place that'll come to mind whenever I think of great galbi restaurants in Gwangju! With such good value pricing and portions, it looked perfect for a work dinner or family gathering. The meat was just so delicious that my revisit intention is 200%. Thanks for the meal!🫶
