When you visit Gyeongju you go to Hwangridan-gil, right? Dongyang Baekban, one of the go-to Korean restaurants there, is nearby, so it was easy to get to.

Cosmos flowers signaling autumn were fluttering along the Gyeongju streets, and moments like this are exactly why I love this city 🫶

After dinner, we always take a stroll along quiet, weekday Hwangridan-gil.

Where to park in Hwangridan-gil: Hwangnam Public Parking Lot, 2,500 won for 2 hours 10 minutes

Parking is hard to find near the packed shopping streets, and expensive too, so whenever my family visits Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, we always park at Hwangnam Public Parking Lot. This time we parked for 2 hours 10 minutes and it came to just ₩2,500!

After parking at Hwangnam Public Parking Lot, it's about an 8-minute walk away, so accessibility is great.

The old hanok has been kept exactly as it was, giving the exterior a wonderfully vintage feel. There's a well-kept lawn right out front too, and our second kid had so much fun playing there.

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch has a variety of tables, from tables for four to two-seaters and six-seaters. The private rooms each fit roughly two types of tables. The green lawn framed through the window like a picture — great sense of detail!

The scent of the elegant old hanok meeting warm sunlight felt like a painting. Our second kid, who had been running around the front yard, didn't want to come in 😭

The retro color combinations here are so pretty too.

We ate in a private room with six-seat and two-seat tables. Since we had a kid, they seated us at the bigger table.

How does the tomato-loaded special chicken stew taste?

The special chicken stew, this Korean restaurant's signature main dish, arrived.

Loaded with tomato and enriched with minced garlic, the flavor is even deeper and more savory — this is the dish that makes my family think of Dongyang Baekban every time we plan a Gyeongju trip.

The side dishes — bean sprouts, braised soybeans, diced radish kimchi, garlic scapes — are comforting, like mom's home cooking, so you can eat without any pressure.

This is the cheese tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) we ordered for our second kid. It's a portion and side perfectly sized for children — the spicy chicken stew is for the adults to enjoy, while tteokgalbi or grilled mackerel makes a great side dish for the kids. Well thought out.

The pollack roe rice looks amazing on its own — the slightly salty pollack roe pairs perfectly with plain white rice.

A cup of sikhye (sweet rice punch) was delicious too.

Since it comes already cooked, you basically just warm it through — once it starts bubbling over medium heat, you can dig right in.

It looks red but it's not really spicy — more of a mild heat, with the tomato's deep savoriness rising up from somewhere deep inside, heavy and rich! The chicken is tender too, melting in your mouth along with the potato chunks 🤭

Eat it with the pollack roe rice plain, or spoon the chicken stew right on top — either way, it's the best.
