When traveling to Gyeongju, figuring out where to eat is quietly one of the biggest dilemmas. Especially on a trip with kids, I always check not only whether there is something the adults want, but also whether there is something the child can eat. This time, while looking around Hwangridan-gil, we wanted a hearty Korean meal and stopped by Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant (황남두꺼비식당) Hwangnam Main Branch.

It is a place that often pops up on social media thanks to its distinctive Gyeongju-inspired dishes. Instead of the famous seven-item Cheomseongdae set, we made the jar-aged kimchi braised pork back ribs our main dish. We added Egg Money Rice for our child, National Treasure No. 31 Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi, mushroom and udon add-ons, and bowls of rice, so our family ate very generously. If you are looking for a Hwangridan-gil restaurant to visit with kids in Gyeongju, I hope this helps with menu choices.

A convenient location and parking for a Hwangridan-gil visit
Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant (황남두꺼비식당) Hwangnam Main Branch is at 16 Poseok-ro 1050beon-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. It is conveniently located for a meal while exploring Hwangridan-gil, so it is easy to fit into the middle of a sightseeing itinerary. Hours are 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a break from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; last orders are at 8:30 p.m.
Hwangridan-gil itself is such a popular Gyeongju destination that meal periods can get busy on weekends and during peak travel seasons. There may be a wait around the usual peak times of noon and 6:00 p.m., so I recommend arriving about 30 minutes early. Since you can combine sightseeing around Hwangridan-gil with a meal, it also works nicely for your route.
Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant does not have its own dedicated parking lot. If you drive, it is easiest to use a public parking lot in the Hwangnam-dong area or a nearby paid lot. Hwangnam Public Parking Lot is one option, though parking can be a little challenging on weekends because there are so many cars. Rather than arriving right before mealtime, I would get there a bit early, park, browse the Hwangridan-gil alleys at leisure, and then head to lunch or dinner. That makes it much easier to take in several Gyeongju sights, too.

What we ordered and prices
Here are the prices and recommended choices to keep in mind. The main jar-aged kimchi braised pork back ribs are ₩16,900 per person, with a two-person minimum. For kids, National Treasure No. 31 Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi is ₩8,000, while Egg Money Rice topped with furikake is ₩5,000. Mushroom and udon add-ons, which make the braised ribs even more substantial, are ₩3,000 each.
This is an especially good lineup for anyone who likes spicy, savory Korean food or for families traveling with children.

Jar-aged kimchi braised pork back ribs and add-ons
At last, the kimchi braised pork back ribs arrived! Just seeing it bubbling away immediately made me think of a bowl of rice. On a Gyeongju trip, you end up eating bread, snacks, and café treats nonstop, right? So having Korean food with warm broth and meat in the middle of it all felt like a proper meal. The aged kimchi was deeply cooked and tender, perfect with the ribs, and the rib meat came off the bones relatively easily.
Put a rib on a leaf of aged kimchi and eat it with a bowl of rice, and you barely need any other side dishes. I had assumed a restaurant in a tourist area would have lots of dishes made mainly for looks, but I liked that Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant had something as filling with rice as these kimchi braised ribs. It felt especially suited to a day when you are craving Korean food rather than Western food while looking for a Hwangridan-gil restaurant.
We also added mushrooms and udon to the braised ribs. Personally, with a dish full of seasoning like this, I cannot give up the fun of adding extras. The mushrooms went beautifully with the sauce, and the udon became another little specialty when we let it soak up plenty of broth.
In particular, after eating some ribs, cooking the udon noodles until soft in the broth gave the meal a completely different feel from the first bites! Having noodles along with rice made it much more generous. If you normally love noodles, the udon add-on at Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant is worth trying.

Egg Money Rice for kids who cannot handle spicy food
When you are traveling around Gyeongju with a child, even after finding a good restaurant, the first thing you wonder as a parent is whether there will be something for the child to eat. We thought the kimchi braised ribs might be difficult for our child, so we ordered Egg Money Rice separately.
Since it is centered on egg and rice, it was a good item to order when visiting with a child who cannot eat spicy food well. The adults could have the braised ribs while the child ate egg rice, so we did not need to find a separate restaurant because of the menu. That was genuinely convenient when traveling with a child.

Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi with a Gyeongju feel
And because we had come all the way to Gyeongju, there was one dish we could not simply pass up: National Treasure No. 31 Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi! True to its name, it incorporates one of Gyeongju’s most iconic images into the food, so you naturally take photos first when it reaches the table. Eating tteokgalbi, grilled minced meat patties, between strongly seasoned dishes like the kimchi braised ribs made for a well-balanced spread, and it was nice for sharing piece by piece with our child.

More than simply ending with a meal, it added that feeling of, “Ah, we really came to Gyeongju,” so it stayed in my memory. For that reason, I thought it would be nice to choose food with a bit of Gyeongju atmosphere for at least one meal on a family trip.

A family itinerary that pairs well with Hwangridan-gil
One of Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant’s strengths is definitely its location. It is not somewhere you need to travel far out of Gyeongju just for a meal; you can naturally stop in while walking Hwangridan-gil, so your travel route does not get interrupted. It is also easy to explore Hwangridan-gil before or after eating, or head toward Cheomseongdae, making it a decent meal stop if you plan to see several Gyeongju attractions in one day.
On a family trip with kids, both parents and children get tired quickly the more often they have to get in and out of the car. Simply being able to park in one area and take care of sightseeing and a meal together makes the trip more comfortable than you might expect. So if you are already planning to explore Hwangridan-gil itself, I would recommend building Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant into your Gyeongju itinerary.

For our family, who wanted warm, filling Korean food rather than a tourist-spot restaurant with only unusual visuals, Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant was a great fit. We chose jar-aged kimchi braised pork back ribs as the main dish, added mushrooms, udon, and rice, then ordered Egg Money Rice for our child and Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi as well. I loved that adults could fill up on the kimchi braised ribs while the child could choose a separate, easier-to-eat dish. Above all, we could enjoy a Gyeongju-inspired menu right in the heart of Hwangridan-gil, making it a memorable meal from the trip. If you are looking for a Hwangridan-gil restaurant, wondering where to eat with a child, or planning a day in Gyeongju that links Hwangridan-gil with nearby sights, keep Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant in mind. Once you have filled up on hearty Korean food, you will have so much more energy to enjoy the rest of Gyeongju.
