Suyeong-dong seafood bar in Busan: fall king prawn and gizzard shad

In short

Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap is a local sashimi restaurant and seafood bar on Suyeongro 725beon-gil in Suyeong-gu, Busan. Arriving at 8pm during the autumn king prawn and gizzard shad season, the writer ordered the small assorted sashimi platter (₩40,000) and got a complimentary maeuntang (spicy fish stew), and by around 10pm the king prawns had sold out. The banchan side dishes at Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap suit drinking perfectly, making it a solid pick in Suyeong-dong.

Exterior of Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap, a sashimi restaurant in Suyeong-dong, Busan

Today I went to a local sashimi restaurant in Suyeong-dong, Busan — Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap (신통영굴국밥).

As a spot that only handles fresh seafood, the tank out front was packed with fish. It's fall, so you know it's shrimp season, right? They're apparently such a shrimp destination that by around 10pm, the staff told us the sweet shrimp had sold out and they couldn't sell any more haha.

The dining room packed with customers at 8pm

Look how packed it was even at 8pm! This isn't a tourist sashimi spot — it's a genuine favorite among locals.

Oyster soup at lunch, seasonal seafood with drinks at night

The menu at Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap felt different depending on the time of day. At lunch, it seemed to focus on meal items like gul gukbap (oyster soup with rice) and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), while in the evening, many people were drinking with seasonal seafood dishes like oyster jeon (pan-fried oyster pancake), stone octopus, and assorted sashimi as their anju (drinking snacks).

If I come back for lunch sometime, I'm definitely trying the gul gukbap... ❤️

It's sweet shrimp and gizzard shad season right now, and they had everything from raw sweet shrimp sashimi to braised monkfish, steamed monkfish, and flounder! The prices are reasonably no-frills, so it's great value.

Banchan side dishes made for drinking

A full spread of side dishes including lettuce wraps and seasoned bellflower root

These are the default side dishes. From lettuce and perilla leaves for wraps to seasoned bellflower root, danmuji (pickled radish), beondegi (silkworm pupae), and corn salad — every single one was perfect for drinking haha. If you need more of anything, just ask the staff and they'll bring extras! The mideoduck (sea pineapple) and baek-kimchi (white kimchi) were surprisingly the standout side dishes. It was nice that they served soy sauce, chojang (vinegar-chili sauce), and makjang (spicy dipping sauce) all together!

What do you get in the ₩40,000 small sashimi platter?

The small assorted sashimi platter I ordered at Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap was ₩40,000. It came mostly with white fish like flounder and what I think was sea bream.

The portion was generous for the price, and the sashimi was so firm and chewy that it was delicious even without any sauce haha.

Sashimi wrapped with makjang sauce and garlic

It was also great eaten with the baek-kimchi like this, or wrapped with makjang, chili, and garlic~~ Overall, the food was so flavorful and fresh that I could clearly see why this place is known as a top sashimi spot in Suyeong-dong!

Free maeuntang with every sashimi order

The maeuntang (spicy fish stew) at Sintongyeong Gul Gukbap comes free when you order sashimi. I ordered it when we were about done with the sashimi.

Spicy complimentary fish stew with tofu and fish

The spicy broth was loaded with tofu and fish, and it was great for curing a hangover too.
