Gwangan Bridge view sashimi restaurant in Gwangalli: Geumrang Hoetjip

In short

Geumrang Hoetjip Gwangalli Main Branch is a sashimi restaurant on the 6th floor of the Marine Rich building in Gwangalli, Busan, facing Gwangan Bridge head-on, and it has held a Blue Ribbon three years running. The writer ordered the Subyeon Hansang for 2, a course running from assorted sashimi through butter-grilled abalone, Chilean sea bass steak, corn fritters and spicy fish stew, with one free refill of sashimi on a small plate. The highlight at Geumrang Hoetjip was the konowata (salted sea cucumber innards), spooned generously onto sashimi and wrapped with seaweed and sushi rice.

Where is Geumrang Hoetjip Gwangalli Main Branch, and where do you park?

The street near Geumrang Hoetjip by Gwangalli Beach

What's a Busan trip without hoe (raw fish sashimi)?! 😀 This time I wanted to go to a proper sashimi restaurant that serves a full spread of side dishes too, so I visited Geumrang Hoetjip.

Approach to Geumrang Hoetjip on the 6th floor of the Marine Rich building

It's near Gwangalli Beach and the Gwangalli sashimi restaurant district, on the 6th floor of the building. For parking, you can use Subyeon Park or Subyeon Children's Park public parking, which supports up to 2 hours — make sure to grab your parking ticket on the way out!

Entrance of Geumrang Hoetjip Gwangalli Main Branch

Arrived at Geumrang Hoetjip! When we went, a lot of people were there with their parents or in family groups. Seems like it's a popular spot for family dinners out too.

3-year consecutive Blue Ribbon marker

Not that many sashimi restaurants get a Blue Ribbon award, but Geumrang Hoetjip has gotten one for 3 years straight 👀

Celebrity autographs on display in the restaurant

There were celebrity autographs on the wall, and it's apparently been featured on shows like Battle Trip. I had no idea it was this famous when I came, so seeing the autographs and the TV mentions got my expectations up even before eating.

What is the Gwangan Bridge view like from the window seats and private rooms?

We went a little earlier than planned on purpose so we could sit at a window seat with a full view of Gwangan Bridge. If you've come all this way, you have to eat sashimi while looking at Gwangan Bridge!! Totally worth showing up early for the window seat.

There are also private rooms further inside, good for a quiet meal, and they'd work well for family gatherings or group dinners.

The view from the window seat, 🫢 — the moment they raised the blinds, Gwangan Bridge was right there. It's so clearly visible that I kept looking out the window the whole time we were eating.

Geumrang Hoetjip menu: what comes with the Subyeon Hansang

Geumrang Hoetjip menu board

The menu ranges quite a bit, from assorted sashimi to seafood, and there are also options for people who just want sashimi without all the side dishes. It was nice that people like us who want to try a bit of everything, and people who just want to focus on the sashimi, can both order according to their taste.

Menu listing the Suvyeon Hansang set

We ordered the Suvyeon Hansang for 2. It comes with premium assorted sashimi, steamed abalone, Chilean sea bass steak, konowata, live octopus tangtangi, soy-marinated shrimp, assorted seafood, seaweed soup, a seasonal dish, butter-grilled scallops, sushi, fritters, corn cheese, egg roe rice, and spicy fish stew. The sashimi is great, but the side dishes were insane, too — and the even more amazing part is that you get one free refill of sashimi on a small plate 🫢

🐟 What we ordered ✔️ Suvyeon Hansang for 2

It's been a while since I've been to a sashimi restaurant like this — the last time was probably with my parents when I was a kid. The sashimi hadn't even come out yet and the table was already packed with side dishes, so I was happily agonizing over what to eat first.

Assorted seafood and accompanying side dishes

I've been going to izakayas or aged-sashimi places a lot lately, so getting fresh seafood served straight up like this felt completely different.

The gaebul (spoon worm) was wriggling 〰️, and the live octopus had crazy strength too haha — even picked up with chopsticks it kept moving,, 🫢 you could really feel how fresh it was.

Freshly grilled butter scallops

The butter-grilled scallops were just grilled, so we ate them piping hot. The buttery smell was wafting up, and being fresh off the grill made them even tastier.

A plate of butter-grilled abalone

The butter-grilled abalone was amazing. Genuinely tender and soft.

There was also mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) served with buckwheat noodles, so adding the noodles in made it a real treat.

You have to try the soy-marinated shrimp!! The flesh was packed and firm rather than mushy, and the sweet-salty soy flavor was exactly my style.

The assorted sashimi platter and the konowata pairing

Finally, the assorted sashimi arrived ✨ Laid out neatly on one plate, it looked gorgeous even before eating. You could tell the slices were thick and fresh just by looking, so I wanted to dig in right away haha.

It included flounder, red seabream, sea bass, halibut, hibiki, and large flounder, and each type was labeled so you could immediately tell what was what — a nice touch.

The real highlight of this place is konowata!!!

Dip the sashimi generously in konowata, put it on seaweed, and wrap it up with soy sauce, pickled ginger and sushi — this combo is seriously insane haha.

And my personal favorite — wrapping it in perilla leaf with baek-kimchi (white kimchi) on top makes it even better.

Albap with fish roe, Chilean sea bass steak and corn fritters

We were still eating sashimi and there was still more of the course to come haha. The egg roe rice was seriously bold in flavor and delicious. Eating sashimi can get a little rich after a while, but one bite of the egg roe rice completely refreshed my palate.

Then the Chilean sea bass steak came out too, and the flesh was genuinely tender and soft. The sauce especially was delicious, and eating it together with the sea bass made it even better.

Partway through, I wondered what this was — turns out it was corn fritters. The corn had a nice popping texture, and being fried made it savory and crispy.

Final course: spicy fish stew loaded with perilla leaves

And then the final course, the spicy fish stew, arrived. You can choose between spicy stew and clear stew, and we went with spicy since we were craving something hot and refreshing.

Our own little tip: load it up with perilla leaves! The subtle perilla aroma coming through makes the spicy stew even better.
